early '90s CR 125 restoration project/help wanted

Edited Date/Time 10/16/2018 6:44am
Hi there

I'm a new member and I'd try to start a new topic (not sure it's the right way of there's some other place to look for this issue) to be helped by you all

I'm from Italy and I love early '90s mx bikes, especially Honda. I'm on the way to a new project and I'd like to restore a CR 125. I love the look of '91, 92, 93 and '94 ( the bikes I dreamed of when I was a young boy...).
I started to look for a reasonably priced bike here in Italy and I found that 93 and 94 are quite rare, while 92 are pretty common. I know they are totally different bikes from many point of views, but I would really appreciate you opinion on this issue. is a 92 better or more collectable than a 93 or vice versa?
what were the strength and weak points of both of them?

to start this project I'd need to sell my '95 RM 125. I found a a guy that would trade my bike for a '93 CR 125 and for this reason I think I'll go for the 93.

I'd really appreciate your opinions and comments on this issue because I see you all are so competent and experienced.
I'd hope I could get also some useful informations for the restoration itself... I'd like to go through a complete rebuild

thanks in advance!

Marco

Interesting project! I prefer the 93-94 but only because of looks. Regarding collectability I have no idea.

I'm currently rebuilding a 96, take a look for inspiration:

And here is a 93 rebuild (not mine):

Good luck and keep us updated!

I think its harder to find 92 Parts than 93-96
A lot OEM Parts for the 92 CR´s aren´t available anymore..
I rebuild a CR125-92 and a CR125-1995 i never had problems to get oem Parts for the 95 but i had near always trouble to get 92 parts. It depends what you need.... don´t wait to long.

HI

thanks for the replies guys.
for the '93 model what scares most is tank and plastics. original OEM parts are no longer available, and I am not sure about the quality of aftermarket plastics. could you please suggest the best brand? the main point would be, I think, the red color. would Acerbis or UFO color be faithful to the original one? the engine parts would not be a problem, I guess.
I know the '92 red is different from '93 and '94, is that true?
one more question: is tank polishing really effective? anny particular product suggested?
I would really be happy to get some of these informations....

at the moment I found 2 bikes to purchase, I'll be able to see them next week, so I don't really know the real conditions of the tank...
Ciao!

92 OEM Fuel Tanks even not available anymore and much more harder to find, because only the 1992 CR125 had these Tank in Shasta White. CR250 had 1992 the newer Tank like CR125 93-97
CR125 91 had the same Tank but was Red , same with CR250 91

If you rebuild a 1993- you can use a Clarke Tank. I belive its 99% same like Original, only the Honda Wing (stamp) near Cascap is missing. These Tanks are still available for a normal price.

The UFO plastics matches very well in colour and have good quality and fit. The only thing with them that annoys me is that their front fender is a bit narrower than OEM and have a slightly different angle.

If you go for a 93, here you have a guy selling Greg Albertyns team graphics, very cool!HRC 93 graphics
