Easily 100 foot. Most of you guys have no idea how to measure a wave.

I thought they were officially measured from the back side which is generally much shorter than the front side. (at least the weather report measurements)

but nobody rides the back..the front is where all the action is..the biggest wave that got me was a wave that closed out the bay in hannalei..it was about 20 to 25 foot faces that day and a super outside wave came in and broke before us..it was about 40 ft high when it rolled over me..i did three backwards supersaults and then it forced me to the bottom..luckily the foam at the top wasn't too thick and i could take a breath of air..very scary

Don't you just love it when a sneaker set comes in and cleans you out ? And breathing foam is a bitch . Had a set do that to me at Blacks the Dec before the El Nino in 81/82. I was riding 5 to 7 Ft Blacks/building on a 5'11" tri round tail . The swell was building and most guys were on 7'+ pintails. Sets were really infrequent, but as it was building they became more consistent. A set appeared on the horizon and I started to scratch. I was getting passed by everyone on the longer boards. My eyesight at that time was pre lasik, so I saw it later than most, I was blind. A wave, about 10 to 12 ft broke in front of me after I had paddled past about the first 2, everything went silent as it started to pitch, it was in slow motion. The barrel was big enough for a VW bus to not get wet, it pitched that far. I know that doesn't sound big, but the barrel was huge, and Blacks is a potent wave. I waited and duck dove the last second. As I went under, it ripped my board from me, even though I had my legs and arms around it, kind of a Kung Fu grip. My cord broke and I was pushed down like I was at the bottom of an elevator shaft. As I came up I grabbed a quick breath, foam and breath, then the next wave hammered me. Kept happening until the set passed. I made my way in about a half mile up the beach and walked almost another quarter + mile and finally found my board. The other thing my zipper on my wetsuit opened on the first wave and made me feel like a sea anchor. I didn't breath much foam luckily but It was a memory I will not forget.

Wow, that wave is HUGE! I couldn't imagine what I'd be thinking if I were one of those guys at that moment besides praying that I come out alive.

the kung fu grip is funny, because that is what happens..you put a death grip on the board and it just gets ripped away

This old man prefers chest high, and duck diving isn't very effective on my 7'-0" hybrid swallow tail. If it get’s big my sac get's small.
