10 rider 450 mains?

After re watching the last 7 rounds of SX 450 mains I can't see a reason for them to put any more than 10 riders on the gate. If 20 makes for "more action" then why not 40?

I can't see any reason to have more than 2 riders. One winner, one loser. In fact, I don't see any reason for anyone to exist at all, anywhere.
