They have a lapper flag in Nascar. It looks like this.

Scott,

You know I can't ask James to slow down, but it would make thing easier. But that would mean I would need to ask the rest of the field to slow down too. Dang it, I don't think any of them will listen to me.

I agree lappers have been around since racing around a circle started, but that doesn't mean it needs to continue to be a problem. We are older and smarter and we can come up with idea's that will bring us out of the stone age and in to the computer age. Open our minds and lets make changes that help our sport. This is a huge problem that our sport has had, everyone thinks that since that's the why it's been, then that's the way it needs to stay. This is 2009, Wow isn't that crazy! We can figure things out that can help our sport and change is not bad.

Lappers are part of racing in my opinion. Outside of the top 2 guys lappers ARE NOT an issue.

That is a fact. Changing the rules to suit one or two guys isn't reasonable and a waste of resources the AMA can't provide anyways.

Lappers are part of the race aswell just cause they arent battling for the #1 spot they are racing for every point they can get.
Arent the leaders suppose to be the fastest and best riders?? why can they not pass someone who is back in the field usually a couple seconds a lap slower than the leaders. Why should the "back markers" slow to let the leaders pass and possibly lose time on the guy they are trying to catch how is that fair??
Just makes it easier for the front runners and harder for the slower guys, making them look over their shoulders to give way to another rider..........really safe on a SX track.

I say do away with that bullshit blue flag. The top guys are going so much faster that it really is a non issue. That dam flag takes the racing out of the racing.

i respectfully disagree with the idea of docking them... it's a race.. they only have 20 laps to get as far up as they can... driving on a freeway is not a race. Stewart was very close to lapping tedesco and milsaps... and they were battling for a podium... i say leave it how it is.. last thing the ama needs is another rule to confuse them and screw up.
If third and fourth are both getting LAPPED, does anyone give a shit who gets third or fourth? Their not even in the race...no?

Lappers should hold their line. It's one of the first things you learn when beggining motoX.

I am sure 3rd and 4th place would really enjoy putting their battle on hold to let the leaders go by. If they are that fast they should just fly on by them not need to be assisted with a flag and a slow down for the leaders rule.
On the holding your line comment another thing you learn early on is focus on whats infront of you not behind you so this rule would go against this theory.

Did you read this whole thread? you know were talking about riders that are getting lapped? The point is riders are speeding up when they get the blue flag making it difficult for the leaders to pass. Their hoping to catch the lapper in front of them and make a pass for 11th place.

Yes your right. Hold your line and focus on whats in front of you so faster riders can pass with out getting wrecked by a you.

Yes and in talking about riders getting lapped it is mentioned that they were lapping way up through the field (well past 11th place) and it was becoming a problem. But what you are saying is that only the only people racing are those in the lead? I think there would be at least 18 other guys that believe they are out there racing too.

"so faster riders can pass without getting wrecked by a me"..... you seen me race? how do you know i am not one of the guys that has this problem with lappers.

Your taking it personal, the "you" doesn't mean you! If you read what you wrote, you will see the "you" in there too. I don't know what it is but, theres probably a name for that kind of writing.

Are you saying you have a problem with lappers? So you admit lappers are a problem?

Does it really matter what place is getting lapped? Your taking the positions to literal. Thats really the main point. I'll say it again. If your a lapper, don't speed up, hold your line, focus on whats in front of you, and don't wreck the leaders who are lapping you!

I do believe it was about the positions a bit it was said at A3 they were lapping up to 5th and because of that lapped riders were an issue. that's what i was trying to make point of the rule might not be so bad for 17th or 18th place but to try and get 5th and 6th to slow for the leaders seems a little stupid to me when they could be charging for a podium spot.

I agree asking 5th and 6th to slow down doesn't seem quite right. I'm not sure where anyone had asked them to slow down. I would guess that the two guys who are racing for first place this year wish lappers would hold there line better to make passing easier.

gotta go man, good talking with ya. : )

Something probably does need doing to make sure 1st and 2nd battle and 15th and 16th battle not 1st and 2nd battling with 16th as 3rd catches up. Some longer lap times may help this a little but that is just my opinion.

I wonder if some of you have ever watched an SX race or passed anyone that's going a lot slower than you, but still trying to ride the track.

MAN DO YOU EVEN RIDE MOTO? THIS IS FUCKING RACING. IF I WAS ONE OF THOSE LAPPED RIDERS I WOULD TAKE IT AS A SLAP IN THE FACE. JAMES STEWART AND CHAD REED ARE FAST ENOUGH TO CATCH THESE GUYS. THEY SHOULD ALSO BE SKILLED ENOUGH TO GET AROUND THEM. WTF START PULLING LAPPERS OFF THE TRACK? THATS EXCITING FOR THE FANS. INSIDE OR OUTSIDE MANDATORY UNDER BLUE FLAG? DO YOU SERIOUSLY THINK THAT THESE ARE REASONABLE SOLUTIONS. THIS IS RACING PEOPLE.

the only reason I see it as a concern is safety.

Does it affect the racing? Could. Does that suck? Yes. But, a tuff block on the track is an issue too. I'm good with managing lappers as best as possible and letting them race as long as the safety issues have been considered.

I'd like to hear from JT$ about that. Having been there and dealt with it, is it a concern for the riders?
2/10/2009 12:17pm
I would say that the shit Larry B is getting in this thread is undeserved. The topic has long been a problem in MX and SX and it was exacerbated by the intense duels of James and RC that were run at a far faster pace than the rest of the field.

Now it is possible that (with the points and pace so close, if not the leaders positions....yet) that in the next few weeks it could again be an issue and I would like to see a resolution before either Chad or James get hung up or stalled out or passed.

Remember when James tried to pass Mike Brown on the last lap and fell while RC squirted by? Or Sorby and Reed? Or other examples?

Larry was smart to raise the issue now because if shit goes down in the next few weeks.....Larry will have every right to cry, complain, protest and file a grievance.

It is part of the true racer spirit to let the leaders go and come back and run with them next week,
