Don't you just love trying to post pics on here since they reformatted?? That bike is looking good. You do plan on twisting the throttle on it , or is it getting hooked up as a garage queen? Everybody needs at least one of those.

Damn that thing is looking good! I'm a sucker for all of the '82 bikes...probably because my first bike was an '82 RM 80.

Thanks everyone. Yeah, I posted other pics but only some showed up...don't know why. This will probably be a garage queen. I have an 81 also and the water cooling seems to throw too many potential problems into the mix. Also can't seem to find chain buffers / sliders. I just find these bikes and fix them up the best I can and they remind me of being a kid. I had an 81 in high school, then almost got the 82. My dad took me to the shop, we checked it out, went back home to talk to mom, and that was the end of that. 26 years later I have part of one...

Thanks Lee.

I've been wondering what you've been up to - tried to email a couple of times but maybe didn't go through?

Anyway I've got this photobucket thing that might work: I can't figure out how to make a link on this site though.

I still would like to know how to post a pic. I've been trying for weeks.

Upload your pic to a photo sharing site like Photobucket. Once your pic is there, you have several options in which to use your photos. Use the IMG code to insert your pic into your post. You will have to create an account to do it, but it's free.

I have a very nice 82 YZ125 that needed the chain buffers, etc. Bikebandit.com had them about a year ago. Didn't check today if they still offered them, but if you haven't checked them out, give them a try.

You done an awesome job on that YZ. I have an 84 YZ125 and was wondering how you restored the gas tank. I've never tried to restore an older bike and you look like you know what you're doing.

Thanks All for the nice comments!

Regarding the tanks, they are a PITA. Especially if they've been sitting with premix in them for years. Lee (the Pipe) came up with the idea of soaking the tank in a container of strong degreaser for a few weeks to pull the oil out of the plastic. I do this at the beginning of the project and just leave the tank alone until I'm ready to put it on the bike.

Then it's a matter of abrasion. Depending on how bad the surface is you might have to start with a razor blade:

Then it's just a matter of sanding, as in hours and hours and hours. I use a little soapy water and wet sand it until it gets to where I want it.

Same ideah here:

Eventually it comes out pretty good

I remember riding the 1982 YZ 125, when they were new.
They handle great, and turn on a dime !

Nice resto. I hope yours is more reliable than mine was. That POS wouldn't make it 3 races in a row before it blew or seized plus it was slow as hell. We skipped buying the 81' cause it was a first year water cooled, but the 80' and 83 were good bikes. The 82 almost stopped my racing career due to rebuilding it at least once a month. Hard to win money when it won't run.
