I was in fear here yesterday, the wind blows thru mountain gaps speeding it up,forget what its called.

I had gusts at fifty with a peak one at 62. One cig by the road and my place would be gone,no way you put out this dry stuff.

I hear Gatlinburg is gone, the aquarium is the sad part or one of the many.

Several 100 building resorts are gone.

It's pretty sad and honestly, I foolishly never thought TN would be victim of this. I always would enjoy the rod run in Gatlinburg.

Yeah it's good from what I heard. They were worried about the few air breathing animals they had, turtles and penguins, because of the crappy air quality. I heard they had an air filtration system for them so that helped. The manager was on the news and said all the animals were fine.

Saw footage of the fire raging right behind the building. They got lucky.

When in highschool we had a fire a few miles from me in the most remote mountainous area, steep, big pines.

Its called hurricane gap for the winds.

We got in before they closed the area and I've never seen a firestorm till then. It made winds, flames were what I figured to be easily 300 feet tall and racing up the mountain at 50 mph.

I can imagine what it was like there.

You see the pics of it roaring behind Dollys new hotel? They said they're reopening the park on Friday.

First job I applied to after graduating was in Gatlinburg in the beginning of this year. I didn't get the offer, but it would have been my first choice.
Something strikes me as a little odd and sad about that video. Holding up my phone and capturing video would be the last thing on my mind in that situation when my family is in grave danger. I would hope that I could focus every bit of my attention to saving their lives.

That's the world we live in now. Record first, act later. Very sad.

It's a primitive response due to the fact that the discovery of fire is by far one of the most significant discoveries in human evolution and that shit is rooted deep inside of us.

That said – when I was in high school we had a wild fire that came through our city. Being on the outskirts of the town my family home was one of the first engulfed. I worked for hours upon hours upon hours getting things out of the house, the neighbors houses, watering everything down, getting animals out the valley, etc. but there were more than one occurrence that we would all be overwhelmed by the oncoming fire and just fall silent and stare at it for a moment... had we had decent cell phones back then I can assure you that we would have snapped photos of it. It's not because "we want to record first, act later" but because such a destructive force demands your attention.

Gatlinburg and pigeon forge are 2 places i avoid like ecoli,

Gatlinburg is fun in winter when it snows and they close the outer 2 lanes, you can park and walk around.

Still get abused by the people selling time shares though,so much i just start telling them to fuck off.

I suppose protecting the video with the legal disclaimer so they can monetize it is another primitive response. Smile

We almost did'nt make it out alive!! But we did.

If only that existed back when the fires were ripping through SD. I would have made a killing... we took our bikes back over some dirt trails after the fire to get around the police blocking the street and it looked like a scene out of Jarhead. Ash so thick you couldn't see more than 10 feet in front of yourself, pockets of glowing fire from the bushes still a flame, and hundreds of charred rabbits scattered everywhere.

I visited Gatlinburg a couple times the year before last. The National Park is beautiful. Gatlinburg itself is the most kitschy batch of nonsense I've ever seen attached to a National Park.

7 dead, bound to be many more.

I heard this morning just half awake that they found 2 alive in the elevator of the hotel that burned.

First time to Tenn, had a hotel reservation in Gatlinburg, seeing it was close to the Smokey's. Get there and was WTF? This is next to a national park? We stayed the night but cancelled our reservation and got out of there. Don't understand the draw for people to go there, but I guess different strokes. The mountains are beautiful and visited 2 times since but stayed out of that tourist trap...

After the 2014 and 2015 fire seasons that we had here, my heart truly goes out to the people in the path of this one.
