1998 SplitFire Pro Circuit KX125 Build

Edited Date/Time 2/22/2025 11:55am

With the 92 Peak PC CR125 and the 94 SplitFire PC KX125 parked up comfortably, I'm making a start with my 3rd Pro Circuit 2 stroke replica. Years ago before I'd built any 2 stroke machines, it was a toss up between a 92 PC 125, or a 98 PC 125.

I couldn't ever find the really rare Pro Circuit parts to get the Peak bike going, even after years of searching, so I changed plan to go with one of my favourite PC bikes of all time - the 1998 SplitFire PC KX125. With Carmichael winning every East coast SX race on it for the perfect season, then going onto win the 98 outdoor season too with ease, it's a pretty special year for Pro Circuit. To me, the '98 is the best looking 2 stroke team bike Pro Circuit ever built.

I was only young, but in 98 I went to watch our home MXDN here in the UK at Foxhill (the crazy mud race!) so got to see Carmichael tear up on this machine which is pretty cool! If only I could rewatch it again now!

So whilst on a 2 week ride trip to CMH (California Motocross Holidays) with some buddies a couple of years ago, we got to visit Pro Circuit shop (a dream for me). Luckily i took over 100 close up pictures of the 98 Splitfire KX, making it easy for me now to spot details on parts used on the bikes roughly.

Anyway, I felt it time to get a build thread underway for the bike, as I've learnt with my past 2 build threads, they create lots of help with parts finding and info regarding the bike.

If anyone has any info/pics etc that can help, feel free to post! Thanks

Couple of magazine covers with the UK MXDN at Foxhill bike, USA plates and that red/white/blue AXO Kit looks incredible!

Should be a real nice bike Chuck. Seems the only hard parts to find will be the rear brake, shock, and mag clutch case. That's good they ran stock hubs too then. Otho g better than a fresh powder coated flo green frame!

Cheers Rob! Hopefully, and yeh easy with stock hubs although i know of a set of KHI for sale now so i kinda wish they did run KHI hubs haha!

The rear Braking disc kit i think will be the hardest bit to find, i may not be able to find one before farleigh but i can add that on in future. You're the only guy in the world i know who has one!

You should go for the Khi hubs. Then you can just use a Khi rear brake set up. Those Khi hubs really change the way a bike looks. all you have to do is swap the rear bearings and add a larger brake carrier.

Even if the KHI ones were cheaper than the stock hubs, i wouldn't be going with KHI. They weren't used at all until 99 as you know, so to me i'm not interested. Theres other cool parts they started using in 99 like carbon bits, but i won't go that route either as it wasn't on the bikes in 98 (aside from a Berg Racing front fork foot guard at some races which i'll buy if one pops up).

I'll just need a 98 Braking rear disc and bracket...

Any updates? I'm contemplating a 98 PC build. And just like everyone else here.....I mostly just want to see pictures! Any luck on finding an original graphics set? Evo's looks good but doesn't have the metal flake.

I'm looking forward to following this build! Glad to see it's finally underway. I expect only the best from you Chuck.

Regarding the super evo rules for the Farleigh race; will you use the '94 frame and engine together? If you run the '98 frame, wouldn't that disqualify you?

There has been progress, but nothing to post right now. I'm hoping to move it forward quite a bit over the next few weeks. I've been so busy with work and my actual racing that it's been hard to fit in. Plus i'm going back to university in September to finish my Masters degree so funds will be tight no doubt.

Whether i get this to a stage i can race it for Farleigh this year is still unknown, but i won't cut corners on quality - so i may be on the 94 KX again for this year. I have the 98 frame and motor set aside for future, but im planning on running a modified 96 frame for now to make it race legal, with my 94 motor that's already built. In 96 the factory AMA bikes in the 125 and 250 class ran the new shape swinger (97 pre-production) and the same with the frames too, so i'm going along those lines (any 96 KHI swingarms out there?!)

I'm still searching for an original kit that i want to put on the bike after i've ridden it...

I have the same hang up with evo. I had been messaging him and I know the design is slightly different and he just told me that they can't do the flo green. I have leads on a flo green front fender and shrouds but I don't know what I should do.

In half of the pictures that I found they just used a black seat cover so I don't think that would be that hard to find and replicate.

Danger graphics in the UK can do the flo green. They are pretty reasonable too.

Danger can do flo green, but their design work lets them down - they won't be close to the originals.

Do you have to modify the frame to accept the '94 engine? Is it not a direct swap? Will the newer swingarm swap in without modification?

I had 2 sets of 98 graphics and a complete set of 97's in the bazaar no one here wanted them. All originals too.

Swingarm fits straight in i believe. I may need a small spacer either side on the lower engine mount but thats it i think Smile

Big thanks to Jason486 for grabbing me a few more close up pics for details, they're coming in handy for the Waterpump guard im making!

Managed to find a set of the Emig Racing axle blocks on an 01 Strategic 3 KX250 team bike my friend owns. Took them to my friends machine shop and had them copied 100%.

I've had a couple of sets made up so if anyones interested in a pair please let me know. They were used on a load of team Kawasaki 125/250s from 97-02. Will come in bare ally for you to either leave silver (as they were on the 98 splitfire sx bikes, or anodise brown as they later had them.
