I love this thread. To me, not being from that area but living in SoCal in the late 90's to mid 2000's, Hondaland was always this great mythical place that I had heard of but never seen and no one could ever tell me where it was. Maybe it's not really as cool as I think it is but in my mind, that place holds a lot of history that includes some of the sports greatest from a time when people didn't have their own perfectly manicured compounds. They went out into the hills and pounded out motos on old school natural terrain tracks like the average Joe except much much faster.

Hondaland got all the press, but the track at the Eringer off ramp way narlier and a lot more popular. I use to go down once a week or so because I knew fast guys would be there. I remember one time I was there and half the tpp 20 from the 125 nationals were there.

And maybe won an overall in a 50+ with a 3/2 moto score?

If you are who I'm guessing I've always been a fan of yours. It seems random I know but my uncle (who got me into this sport) told me of a time he meet you at Carlsbad in 82' I believe. He said you were a cool kid who hauled ass and he would use you as an example (no disrespect intended) as a guy to explain to this toddler just how fast the likes of Barnett and Ward etc really were.. I remember asking my uncle how you were doing all the time and I believe 1984 or 85 you had a solid season.

Again if I'm right

The outdoor track crossed over the SX track too. You can see the remnants below the road if you follow the faint tracks.

If you were into MX in the 80 and early 90s it was a great mythical place. People say the El Cajone zone was the place, nope, this area was. Dozens of great, world class riders rode at Hondaland and the hills around it.

If you look back at the bottom of page 2, I posted an interactive map to this area. You can navigate the map right from the post and zoom out and see where it is.

I'm driving at the moment and using voice to text or else I would grab the link for you.

These are the only tracks I can make out. I'm not even sure they're right as I can't connect them.

This image is looking towards the two hill loops you can see in the bottom right corner of the above map screen grab from across the road.

I crashed hard on that stepup after the woop section, clipped my wheel on the down side and went straight over the bars.

Pretty sure some of these shots were in DirtBike magazine circa 1985, right?
Being friends with the Johnny and David got me introduced to Fran Kuhn and I was able to work at most of the races on the west coast for Dirt Rider. Fran has some great skills behind the lens. Don't forget these were when we used film in cameras!

Sounds about right, that track was no joke. I was on 80's at the time, so I didn't go anywhere near that SX track. Laughing

I think Mike Kiedrowski was the last factory guy I ever saw ride that place.

My point was that even for its time, Hopetown did not exactly resemble motocross. Your claim that Hopetown is where RD showed america "what MX was all about" is what I take issue with. The Euros certainly showed Americans something at Hopetown but I'm just not sure I would call it motocross, even for its time.

Cheers.
I agree. The Hopetown race was more like a GP or Hare Scrambles than an MX race.
