I've got some pics of Johnny O', Donnie Hansen and Chuck Sun riding the tracks behind my parents house. Donnie bought a house 2 blocks from me as a kid and Johnny rented a room from him. I use to go up and watch them ride after I got home from school ('81-'84). I spent many days hanging out in their garage. Johnny was always really cool to me, Donnie was kind of impersonal, but he wasn't much of a kid kinda guy. I was many years younger than them, so they were my heroes at the time. I still talk to Johnny, but Donnie was never the same after his crash, I don't think he even remembers me. Those were the days when they were killing it in the Motocross and Trophy Des nations. I'll try and dig them out, I have lots of pics of those three, along with some of the other riders that use to come train with them. They track(s) behind our house were beat down / hard pack and 100% natural, with some ridiculous fire road jumps as part of the track. I was barely a novice racer at the time, but I couldn't even get around some of the track, it was just too gnarly....
Use to ride erringer with Donnie and Johnny all the time

This thread is so cool!! I grew up in Thousand Oaks and had always heard about the mysterious Hondaland. It was before my time (born in '80 so as a rider I was a kid of the 90's). I'm sure it was still back there and looking back I wish I had nutted up and gone exploring out there.

Sparkey, that is rad to hear! Never knew there was a SX track back there. I grew up living right off Arboles, the other end of it though. My dad used to ride out of our garage into the hills above the CLU campus. By the time I was riding there were too many houses there though. In high school we used to ride in the hills between Newbury Park and the Camarillo grade.

To this day I'll be driving around with my wife and point out places all over that i used to ride at, she gets annoyed and just rolls her eyes. We had a track back off Kanan Rd and another off Decker. Nothing special mostly trails linked together. I used to go for a quick ride then surf after. good times!

Carlisle Canyon road?? (Decker) ..... I used to ride my KX80 there

Rode at the Newbury Park / Conejo grade area too. I think it was called " Talleys" officially...hahaha.....man for a few years there, you would go there on a Saturday morning and there would be people riding all over the place...I remember some pretty knarly jumps and stuff that went right next to the freeway....good times.

You can still Mtn bike here, thanks to the late great Bob Hope !

Hopetown was far from an MX track.
Ohh so hare scrambles was already established ?

It's obvious that "Hare Scrambles" per se had not been established yet back then. I realize this.

My point was that even for its time, Hopetown did not exactly resemble motocross. Your claim that Hopetown is where RD showed america "what MX was all about" is what I take issue with. The Euros certainly showed Americans something at Hopetown but I'm just not sure I would call it motocross, even for its time.

Cheers.

Found a few of my old black and white shots from back in the day. One taught me don't get too close.

Yes! EPIC! I should have taken the time to have some photos taken of my Honda Land adventures as I launched up and off the same jumps. I sometimes ran into a few security people over the years and even evaded the authority on many occasions. (they were sure clever trying to cite me.However, I had with me the land survey maps and knew where to park and and the exact perimeter so my bike would be OUTSIDE when they showed up, just before they got close I would ride to the outside. They could not legally do anything as I was not on private property... anymore. I often would wave as I rode off..carefully so I was not followed..great memories! I rode and practiced there quite often. I loved them hills!

Pretty sure some of these shots were in DirtBike magazine circa 1985, right?

It's the Big Sky neighborhood. Luckily my Uncle was good friends with Sid, so we always got to fuck around for a while out there, as long as we didn't touch the SX track. The other place to park was up at Ed Staubbs' house up at the end of Tapo Cyn.
The other epic outdoor tracks were behind my house across from Elephant rock at the end of Sycamore. Johnny lived at the end of 1st street, before it went all the way through to Wood Ranch. That's where his SX track was, and it was a quick ride to the hills by my house. For those that know, the old reservoir tracks.
The most fun was walking by Kyle Lewis' house on the way to school at Royal on a Monday after a shitty weekend and giving gentle jabs.

I grew up on Jenny Drive and Old Conejo Road in Newbury Park! I remember hearing bikes over there all the time in the early '90s. I used to run outside and watch for guys climbing that huge hill. I actually learned how to ride over there with my dad. He'd follow me on foot as I cruised around. That land is fully developed now. It's just a bunch of commercial buildings.

Cool thread! Thanks for the memories.

You can just make out the water tank in the background of top picture. Never went to the Honda land track but my buddy told me it was nearby.

Those were the days for sure. Lived in Thousand Oaks and rode all over T.O. and Newbury Park. Ride from the garage out to the practice track in the hills.

Nope, Hondaland is still there and you can even see outlines of the outdoor track. There was killer track at the top of erringer that is gone, but you can still see the outlines of that track on the hill sides.

If you lived up by Elephant rock and you're talking about the track up there that Bill Payne and Johhny Roche built I'm about 100% sure we rode together. The reservoir had some good tracks up there and just great riding. Of course you could just ride up the road to the top of Fitzgerald and ride the levels track or the canyon track.. I'm also certain that if you know Staubb we've met.

I use to ride the outdoor track at Hondaland about 3 times a week in 84 and 85, I rode the sx track too, but not much. When they redid the sx track around 90 they didnt let anyone on it after that for insurance reasons and Sid was pretty serious about keeping people out. One time in Lewis was up there riding it on a Yamaha and Sid was pissed at him.

Simi Valley was a great place to grow up in the 80s and early 90s, so many tracks in the hills and so many fast guys to ride with, so many pros lived in that town during that period. Hansen lived about 30 seconds from my house, I know as a kid I bugged that poor guy to death, but him and his dad were cool to me. I remember being in Johhny Os garage and having random people come ask for Honda parts. Bailey lived in the condos behind the old drive in and every kid in that neighborhood had a bailey jersey and every kid that rode in that area had a free set of JT gear, Bailey was cool like that. Endlessly riding in the hills with guys like DR516 and Uptite and many other fast guys was a good time. So many good tracks too besides Hondaland, Erringer, the top of Stow had two good tracks, Kuener had a nasty outdoor track, the two tracks at the top of fitzgerald, the tracks up at the end of Sycamore, and Tapo had a good track, so many it was great. Decoster told me in 81 that of all the tracks hes ridin in his life, the Erringer track is probably the roughest track hes ever ridin and it was why Honda did all there outdoor testing there 80-84.

I can name countless pros that grew up in that town, not to mention the imports that lived there at one time or another to test and ride Hondaland. Great place to grow up, to bad Simi sucks now.

Yeah, I was on Crosby, right at College. Guys used to park at my house and go from there since the cops never came up our way back then. The guy that owned all that land only got pissed when he was grazing his cattle in the area. If I remember correctly, when you put the hill track and the reservoir part together, it was like a 3 minute lap time. I am pretty sure my best friend and I were the very last people to ride them before they developed all that land. The dozers were already grading pads.

Who was the guy that lived at Fitzgerald and Seqouia, at that corner house? I remember going up to the levels track and watching that dude and Johnny just blasting that place. I got laid for the first time up there.

If you go to this location on Google maps, zoom in and you'll see horse corrals, the original sx track was there and the outdoor track was across the road.

Melon and RedRum,

was Carlisle Canyon the track that you had to drive across this single lane 15' bridge to get back into the canyon? If so, that was one of our favorites. We also had another good one behind Westlake High School before it was developed. Back in 82-86. We would park in the student parking lot and ride back in.

I'm sure we rode together at Talley's in NP at some point. I rode there a lot from 89-90 as I lived in NP for a year right after college

Great times growing up in that area. It was very common to see Johnny O training on his bicycle around TO. We'd always give a shout out driving by and he would always wave to us.

Hondaland got all the press, but the track at the Eringer off ramp way narlier and a lot more popular. I use to go down once a week or so because I knew fast guys would be there. I remember one time I was there and half the tpp 20 from the 125 nationals were there.

was Carlisle Canyon the track that you had to drive across this single lane 15' bridge to get back into the canyon? If so, that was one of our favorites. We also had another good one behind Westlake High School before it was developed. Back in 82-86. We would park in the student parking lot and ride back in.

I'm sure we rode together at Talley's in NP at some point. I rode there a lot from 89-90 as I lived in NP for a year right after college

Great times growing up in that area. It was very common to see Johnny O training on his bicycle around TO. We'd always give a shout out driving by and he would always wave to us.
Carlisle started getting busted by the cops pretty frequently because it turned into quite the nighttime party spot. There was also the track off of Kanan going up the hill that was fun while it lasted.

I think I found a remnant of the track and it's exact location. Check out the horseshoe shaped lines in the hill on this google map and compare it to the picture from page 1.

Opps, here is the pic from page 1. The horseshoes are at the top left of the pic.

If you zoom out, you can see the outline of part of the outdoor track. I assume the SX track was in the flat area on the south side of the road.

Hondaland got all the press, but the track at the Eringer off ramp way narlier and a lot more popular. I use to go down once a week or so because I knew fast guys would be there. I remember one time I was there and half the tpp 20 from the 125 nationals were there.
You didn't ride Suzuki's in the mid 80s did you?

This is a great thread btw
