Did some turbo testing today

Got to romp around Silver Lake Dunes today to do some testing on the new Yamaha YXZ 1000R with the MPI Turbo kit we installed not too long ago. Yamaha was there doing some dealer demos so it was a good baseline to be able to compare the turbo to the non-turbo models.

Also brought along our new Can-Am Maverick X-DS Turbo.

Holy hell that YXZ is 1000 times more fun than the Can-Am. It's so much more fun to drive that when you hop back in the Can-Am, it's just boring. I never thought shifting would make so much of a difference, but it did!

I'll be honest; I think so, but I'm terrible with names haha...

Back in the office today, I think they said they were headed to Pennsylvania from here. They did consumer demos over the weekend and then the dealer demos on Monday, so I'm sure they were ready to hit the road.

That's impressive, I got to bomb around in a maverick XC one night and I couldn't imagine it getting any more fun.

See that's what I thought too! I don't know if it's actually any faster or better-performing than the Maverick or a RZR, but it most certainly is more fun!

I will say they sit quite a bit lower than the Mavericks, RZRs, and Wildcats, so it does corner a little better, but other than that it's tough to tell if it's any better than anything else because you simply don't care or aren't paying attention.

We have a Rekluse in stock for it now too, so we'll get that thing slapped on there and see if that makes any difference.

That YXZ was pretty fun, especially in pre-production form. The MPI kit is pretty darn good and the RPM kit is absolutely amazing. I highly recommend trying one given the opportunity. Now if only someone did a rear gear kit for it....

Can you run the RPM kit on a stock one? Or do you have to start replacing rods and clutch springs? Yamaha guys were telling us that doing anymore than the basic stage-1 MPI kit (155HP) and you'll start having to do more than just slapping on a turbo... Said they had some 4-5th gear issues with the bigger HP numbers

I've heard rumors of a trail-model that would have a little different gearing so it'll be interesting to see how that goes, especially given our location; a few dunes riders with a ton of trail guys.

I'll have to ask next time I'm on the horn with Mike over there but I'm sure its not a plug and play like the MPI. Did you guys experience any heating issues with the MPI kit? We certainly did down here, but it was 104 outside and they weren't our cars necessarily Whistling

I think anyone with moto background will excel with these cars. Such a nimble setup for up there in Michigan.

I have 2 buddies/customers who recently bought YXZ's. 1 of them came over saturday and I took him through our trails on our 125 acres of timber, the trails are mostly slow and tight with a few good sized hills. His is all stock, he did the trails ok but would have to stop and wait at the bottom of the hills for me to get out of the way at the top so he could hammer all the way up without having to stop and try to take off.(I was on my ranger 900xp witch will climb a hill like a billy goat). Then I took it for a drive on the old logging road where I could open it up a bit, Holy shit that was fun!, not a great machine for the kind of trails we have around here but super fun if you have somewhere to open it up.

Then the other guy came over right before it started to rain, his is stock except for the rekluse clutch. He played around on my mx practice track witch dont get used much anymore and is covered in grass. I didnt drive his but Im sure the rekluse is a definate plus. He also has a mx track at his house and has been messing with the suspension and cant get the front end to not want to drop like a rock when he jumps, any suggestions without spending a fortune?

I noticed some heat issues on the Can-Am, but not on the YXZ. But it was 70 and windy, so it may be a different story once it gets up to 90 this summer...

Yeah the trail-riding might be tough if you get into some slow-speed sections where you need to be on the clutch a lot but other than that I was thoroughly impressed. We're a dealer for Polaris, Yamaha, Can-Am, and Arctic Cat and I have no reservations about telling people the Yamaha is the way to go - with the exception of people with wives and kids who don't know how or want to shift.

Not sure on the jumping, I'd have to get a recommendation from Yamaha. I would think that slowing the rebound on the rear down would help a bit, but other than that I'm not sure...
