My brother recently gave me an old bike he never really used, he got it off a friend in trade for a motor. I've found out it's a 1981 Yamaha YZ250, but he said it's SUPER LOUD, like the cops were called on him last time he started it up.

I imagine I need to clean the carburetor, but I'm worried about the sound. Would I need to just replace the silencer with something like a DG Type II oval silencer? Or would I need to replace the whole pipe? Also, would I need to know how to solder the silencer on to the pipe or do they just come apart?

I'm not very versed in mechanical work, and am starting my adventure here with you all, so any tips (and patience) is appreciated. I promise I'm a quick learner, but would love some experienced guidance in getting this thing running again.

FMF makes a universal turbine core2 bolt on,rocky mountain motorcycle partnormally stocks them, that should quite it down some, those aircooled bikes were loud from get go,when the manufactures went with a watercooled lined cylinder they were able tone down those 2 strokes , have fun restoring that bike it looks like a blast to ride.

Remember, noise does not equal power.

The Silencer separates from the pipe, it slide's onto the end of the pipe. Those mufflers are welded shut, so they are not repack-able. Do a google search, check the vintage websites, there are choices out there. The YZ's are well supported.

Yes, your bike should be very loud. You have the stock silencer on it. Back in 1984, three years after the bike came out, I bought an '81 250. It still had the stock non repackable silencer on it. When the silencer was taken off the bike the packing would slide from one end down to the other when tilted up or down. That bike was super loud.
Your bike actually has the stock fenders still on it.

1984.
