Go up to Mt. Soledad and the Cross to get a view of the entire city.

Also check out Downtown La Jolla, close to Children's Pool where the Seals are. There is a very small store that has stairs that lead you down to a cave with a view of the Ocean. If you are claustrophobic, it might be tough, but once you get to the bottom it's cool. Bring a camera and they charge a few bucks.

If you like Carne Asada, hit up Lolita's downtown, next to Petco park.

If you like Pizza, try Lefty's Chicago style in Hilcrest / North Park (closed on Monday)

Barbeque go to Phil's Barbeque near the Sports Arena (closed Monday. Expect to wait 30 minutes in line to get in. It's worth it.

There's a wild animal park about 30 minutes from SD, also check out Pala Casino with the track a 1/2 mile from the casino. The USS Midway is kinda cool. You almost can't miss good Mexican food in SD.

Avoid Logan Heights and TJ unless you like cheap thrills. Gas Lamp is good, many restaurants and nightlife. Go over to the Fishing docks in Point Loma and check it out if any of the Long Range boats come in. Animal Park SD Zoo, Balboa Aviation museum.

First off, Phil's BBQ sucks! It's not BBQ, its cooked in an oven. Therefore it can't really be called bbq.

That said, most of the other rec's seem good. Skip TJ, not safe at all now. I know guys that have lived here for 50 years and wont go down there. Tons of friends here that are from mexico wont go there.

Wild animal park, zoo, Children's Pool in La Jolla, Soledad, Gaslamp, all great places to hit up.

Rent a couple bikes and park down by the bay (bring a lot of quarters). You can pretty much ride anywhere in the city from there. Head towards http://www.seaportvillage.com/ and ride past The Star of India and maybe stop and visit the http://www.sdmaritime.org/? Once your down by the bay you can take a ferry ride over to Coronado Island http://www.sdhe.com/...iego-bay-ferry.html. Coronado island has lot's of cool shops and a pretty good brewery to eat some good food and have a few good drinks at http://www.coronadobrewingcompany.com/ . You could also head the opposite way and head over to Point Loma and go here... http://www.pointlomaseafoods.com/ . At night, If your into music check out http://www.casbahmusic.com/ I've lived here all my life and I still find things to do. Talking about all this makes me pumped for the weekend! By the way if your wife cant ride a bike you can access all the above by vehical.....my wife has a brand new beach cruiser in the garage thats never been used, she don't like all the "crowds on the boardwalk" .

September in San Diego is absolutely the best time of year to come. Stay at the beach as it will be hot and schools will have started back up, so it will be less crowded and you won't have to spend time driving all over the place.

What interests do you guys have? What kind of food do you like? Athletic? This is my hometown and I currently live here (I always come back), so I can really give you more info than you might want.

Also how about a price range per night it would be helpful? That time of year is a mixed bag for prices. Summer but kids are in school. I would drop $2000 and rent a beach house or condo for two weeks, but look for a reduced late season rate or some kind of deal.
