You can't go wrong with the opposite side patella graft (contralateral). Don't have just any doc do it though, the guy has to be trained for the procedure. I had my surgery on 11/13/09 and my first ride back was 1/20/10, not even three months, and yes it was cleared by the doc.

Unless youre old and sedentary do not even think about hamstring or cadaver, patella is the way to go. You live in UT, get a plane ticket down to see Mark Sanders -- www.sandersclinic.net . I took initiative once i found out mine was possibly torn and called the doc's office who founded the graft, Dr. Shelbourne, and asked for any docs that may have done a residency or fellowship with him in my area. I ended up having to drive 2 1/2 hours but it was worth being back on the bike in 2 1/2 months, and back to running @ the 5 weeks mark. Not to mention walking out on my own power day of surgery with no brace on. If anyone were to ask me, it's not worth sitting the extra 3-6 months out. Factor in your time off work too, Not sure how active it is but with mine I had to be completely free of restrictions and I was back in 5 weeks, with no further increase in swelling in a full days work.

Just do your research on it.. It pays off in the end.

And make sure you have a good doc or pt check it out, have them do the lachmans test, the mri's aren't 100% accurate. The prehab is the most important thing as well, you want FULL range of motion and most of the swelling out. You're fine to walk on it, but I would avoid any hard impact activities. Loose joints=damage to the knee. And as someone mentioned find a stationary bike, ride it an hour a day. The stronger you build your leg muscles up before surgery, the easier it will be afterwards.

I hurt my knee a week ago and after an MRI my doc told me I need a acl replacement where they take a graft from the hamstring. I just wanted some opinions from other members that may have had this done. Should I get it over with and have surgery? Or do I try to wait it out? I can walk ok and have decent range of motion still. Any info would be appreciated.
Yea you read that right,It's the size of a dime,And when they enlarged it on the screen you could see the blades! And they were trying to cover it up and were like i'm not sure what it is and i said it looks like a sawblade and you could see it in their face they knew they were in deep shit!!
