The thing you have to do is get the very best one from the get go. There is nothing worste then having a lot of money in a head hunter only to find out the opposition has a better head hunter with different or bias opinions that trump your head hunters credintials. Also it sucks to have your head hunter say I can't beat that hunter. That freakin sucks big time and at most likely at short notice. Go with the best from the get go. They are worth the extra coin.

Headhunter, a.k.a. flesh peddler…find jobs for people and charge the companies that hire a substantial fee. 20 – 30% of candidate’s first year’s annual compensation
I use these guys a lot
www.aerotek.com
Companies that hire should be the ones to pay those fees.. not the candidate.
Also, this money comes from different budgets, and has nothing to do with salary. If a headhunter wants to charge you, the candidate, money for his service.. RUN LIKE HELL!!!
4 things you need in life: A good doctor, a good lawyer, a good accountant, and a good headhunter.
As far as the physical appearance of said headhunters.. and their team. Say some guy is wearing that $2000 suit.... I'd be in touch with his underlings as those are the guys doing the footwork. It's not all about having pee-ons running the show for some hot shot.
It's very important that said headhunter truly understands your skill set as well as what is important to you.... ie: Money, location, travel, shift, overtime, career goals, benefits, etc etc. Without a true understanding of the above.. you will not be placed into a satisfying career with a good company to which you may blossom and grow professionally.
Remember it is in the headhunters best interest to place you into a satisfying career that you will stick with.. the last thing they want is to deal with is a company 3 months later when you quit.. asking them to do more work to replace you... or having to give back approx 75% of the fee.
Hope this helps! =)
Now days there are very reputable firms which will do the hard work to get you that career which will make you happy..
As Pony and Racer stated.. you could benefit greatly from one. I think the stigma of getting screwed by a headhunter is just a few bad apples that have spoiled a few outlooks on them. Don't let them deter you.
Was it contract work or permanent placement when you worked w/them?
