The political push for new fuel regulations within makes total sense to me. Reducing the lift and coast mentality will create better racing. It will also benefit the heavier weights.

adding a 5th gear to your transmission choice may allow another level of unbiased opinion

This is the best thread in the non moto section, no one has ever said a cross word to anyone ever, please leave that to the moto related section, we all love F1 here, we all can ride motorcycles but F1 is a fantasy, no need to call people names

Bit of a culture shock, I would imagine!

Gene Haas overwhelmed by 'complex' Formula 1 in testing

Gene Haas has conceded to being "a little bit overwhelmed" by the complex nature of Formula 1 following his induction over the past few days.

Although entering F1 on a solid footing, given his own motorsport background in the United States and building a car complete with Ferrari power unit and a raft of other parts, Haas has been taken aback by what he has so far experienced.

In particular, the past two days of the second test at Barcelona have opened Haas's eyes given the technical issues that have confined Esteban Gutierrez to the garage. Gutierrez completed just 23 laps on Tuesday prior to the VF-16 sustaining a fuel system issue, followed by an overnight replacement of the turbocharger.

With telemetry showing that turbo revving too high on the installation lap on Wednesday, another replacement has had to be installed.

"The past two days have been very frustrating. The weather is perfect, the track is good, and we want to be out there," said Haas.

"We had an especially good week last week, but this is more what a typical normal week would be. "I don't really have an explanation of why we're experiencing these problems now.

"But talking to others I think it's pretty typical you lose a day here and there because something doesn't go quite right, and that is what we've had the last two days."

Haas is trying to come to terms with the technical nature of F1, compared to what he has become accustomed to with his NASCAR operation in the United States.

"The complexity of the cars and engines and what we are doing with them is way beyond anything I ever expected," added Haas. "The technical aspect of the cars is fascinating. I think for the engineers especially, who design and work on them, it's a real challenge to get these cars to do what they do.

"So while it's a real challenge on one hand, on the other I don't think the fans understand how complex it is. "Even I didn't know. I was kind of naive, too, about what goes into making one of these cars run.

"It is a very complex process, it is a complex car, it's a complex way to race cars, and right now, it's a little bit overwhelming to be honest with you."

Gutierrez called on the team to be patient as it encounters the numerous teething troubles it is now facing.
"It is frustrating, which is not the nicest thing," said Gutierrez.

"We just we need to keep our focus and find solutions to the situations we are experiencing at the moment.

"The focus has to be there and not to lose patience because the whole team is working very hard to be prepared for Melbourne."

I can't imagine how overwhelming it must be for haas, talk about being thrown into the lions den? They'll figure it out I'm sure, I wish them luck this season and maybe score some points

Yes beast666 I'm sure most of us here would love to put a few laps down in an F1 car, I love this thread and don't want it to go down the path of calling each other names if we don't agree on something, ok maybe that's a little goody goody but I get a lot of info from this thread, I doubt anything F1 got put in the dumbgeon

I work for a company that supplies F1 drive line components to a few teams so I get to go back to the U.K. a few times a year to their H.Q. for meetings. It's like walking into Lockheed's Skunk Works, cell phones have to be checked in and even then they tape up the camera lens. The stuff I see and what they are doing is just mind blowing. They are pushing the limits on so many things it's overwhelming tbh. But that's what F1 is all about... the cubic $ being spent is like a budget of a nuclear nation going to war.

But that said, every team we deal with has a great espresso machine and that's the most important thing to the staff LOL (they been on 70 hour work weeks since early December - late November). It's the little things in life that makes people happy.

Todays test notes:

With about 100 minutes of running left today…

- Raikkonen fastest after ultra-soft run, having previously also set the fastest soft-tyre time of pre-season so far

- Ferrari causes a stir by giving a one-lap trial to the halo cockpit protection design at the start of the day

- Two offs for Grosjean either side of lunch on another difficult day for Haas, but the team has at least managed 66 laps today

- Massa’s soft-tyre best is only four tenths slower than Raikkonen’s ultra-soft, but the Brazilian’s own attempt on the softest Pirelli rubber is hindered by Kvyat in the final sector

- Most teams focusing on race runs for the afternoon, while Manor gives Wehrlein a taste of super-softs in qualifying simulation

If Maldonado was still in F1, his would have a crosshairs on it.

There have been some fugly designs of this "halo" deal, but this one by Ferrari, though still hideous, is the best looking of them all.
