Italian immigrants often name their boys Joey, Is this a clue ? Is his family name Italian ? ......... Was it maybe misunderstood when Joey's grandfather immigrated to the USA from Italy ?

Sort of like what happened to Villopoto ??

If he isn't Amish, I'll guess the name is derived from something French...but I really have no clue.

at one point I was thinking Eastern Europe, but the way everyone pronounces it, it sure sounds Italian, maybe it was originally Savace (pronounced just like the well-known Italian clothing company Versace)

Does Joey not use the name Versace in his twitter account ?

I don't think most Americans really care about this other than an interesting diversion or story. We see each other as Americans, hence the historic reference to 'melting pot'

This may be changing now with the incessant push for a form of political correctness called 'diversity' encouraging folk to retain heritage, language, and differences at the expense of assimilation.
