Thought I was done racing. My buddy said that wouldn't do and built me a YZ from his stash of parts. A little TLC and plastic and I am back in the game.

Looks great! The 84 YZ is very competitive in the Ultima 250 class.

Looks great. Plastic looks good. I am taking off my nice original yellow and getting some cheaper stuff in white. I have to steal the seat off my 85 when I ride my 84 because the 84 seat is like riding an old broken down horse. Looks like your seat has the tall foam so good for you, it makes a world of difference. What footpegs were used? I have a Fatty and stock silencer and it wants to melt the side plate where the joint is so be careful. It is not a matter of running the rubber grommets on the side plates. I like everything about the bike besides the fork springs and retarded z spokes. Have an 83 front hub but need a rear and then z spokes will be out of my life. Mainly interested in what model of bike the pegs came from and how much grinding it took to fit.

Thankyou. I run triple layers of aluminum tape under side plate as plastic melts bad otherwise as you pointed out. I wanted a white bike as I like the Euro look. I added foam and an eBay cover...yes it is very brite red.. both ends of suspension redone and plush as it gets for me. The dg silencer and the fatty look nice n shiney too. Runs very crisp, but the cylinder has some markings on it I will have to figure out regarding porting. It is definitely not stock. Too nice to be a garage job too. huh the pegs. I think I bought them for an 87? And they fit fine.. if I can find the receipt I will post that up. I forgot as my buddy helped me and we both had a stash of stuff to use. It sure turns better than my 86 cr250.0

On the ims web site it shows 90 - 96 as the oldest yz pegs. Are those the ones? Is your cylinder 39x or 56a ?

Pegs are 87 yz 250/490 ins. Receipt says motocity in Tempe az. Ask for Dave.

Thats the 85 cylinder. I have an extra 85 cylinder and head that I was going to put on my 84 but if I ever did race it my luck someone would complain. When I ride the 2 yz's back to back you can sure tell. The 85 has had additional intake port cut in the cylinder and it goes pretty good. I have the power valve in the open position all the time on the 85. It gave up some bottom when I did that but I cut down my silencer and got most of it back.

I race local, non ahrma, and no problem. Seems silly anyways. The 84 cylinder was toast so 85 looked like the sweet set up. It was a budget issue too.

Why did you decide to have the power valve not function? Those YZs were pretty darn good. RJ gave the Honda team a run on production based bikes. I know they weren't stock, but they weren't Honda Factory trick
Has anyone come across a old Yamaha wrench report for that bike? I remember they gave the porting specs they said they were running on the Factory team .It really was a good setup as really made that motor run good

I have the article from moto cross magazine and dirt bike that details the wrench report for the 84. I haven't run across a wrench report for the 85. The only thing I have found was Eric Gorr said to drill a boost port and Boyesen reeds on the 85. The reason I disabled the power valve on the 85 is the nut backed off the linkage and the wishbone that held the pv also broke. The end of the valve got pretty beat up. I made a little aluminum plate that would allow me to keep the power valve in a fixed position. This was just to keep riding but has kind of turned into a temporary permanant deal.

Nice neat looking 84 yz 250. I have a question the radiator shrouds that you have on this bike are white. They are normally red where did you get the white ones from they look good. Are they just the same 84 red ones painted white or are they from another model would love to know? Cheers

I recently sold that bike for 1300. Went in less than ten minutes, I have never sold a bike that quickly. These are good bikes. None of the clutch cover rot issues of the Hondas, infinitely better parts availability than Kawies, and you don't have to deal with the enduro tank that the similar year RMs have. Wish I could have kept it, but health and lingering legal issues from my folk's probate meant I had to make some tough choices. Both years are really great bikes, it's awesome to see someone racing them!
