A large part of "who we are" is based not only on the experiences that we have had, but also on the life of our fathers and mothers.
If you come from a family with money, you will likely have money.
If you come from a family that was educated, you will likely be educated.
If you come from a family that traveled, you will take that exposure of culture with you.
If you come from a family that had access to healthcare, you will be healthier, and have the ability to make decisions that will likely influence your health further.
If you came from the ghetto, you likely did not have family that was educated; had any access to healthcare; and all that other jazz.
Affirmative action is a crappy-assed program, but it is all that we have to try to change the course of history. It is not about the guy who is placed in the job; it is about the life-changes that he will be able to make with his kids, and so forth.
Besides, Affirmative Action only is in play for public sector jobs (why shouldn't the police/fire force be somewhat representative of the community it serves? And don't give me that "under-qualified crap". AA only applies to those who pass the test. Once a pool of qualified persons is established, the second round of evaulation looks at deficits in representation, and looks to make positive impacts on those who are statistically under-represented); and Festus's Radiator Shop ain't gotta hire a minority if he don't wanna.
But, you know all this, and just like to ignore the advantages that you have.

Im not sure what "advantages" you are referring to, because I sure as hell didnt get any. Ive been on my own since 17 years old and nobody ever gave me a damn thing. Put myself thru the last 2 years of high school living on my own, I can guaran-damn-tee you there wasnt any advantages out there for me. Ive had to scratch & claw my whole life for every penny that passed thru my hands.
And to counter your sweeping generalizations, when I was in high school all the blacks that I went to school with were WAY more affluent and wealthy than the white kids. The black kids in my high school had parents who were professors & teachers at Prairie View University and they were the ones with the "advantages". Most them had nice big houses and plenty of money and went on to get graduate degrees and further. ME? I had to work weekends and nights after school cleaning horse stalls to feed myself and figure out how to scratch up enough money to pay for a class ring and cap & gown.
