So I did my first valve adjustment/check, valves were in spec. I used a new valve cover gasket and yamabond gasket maker, the only thing is I put the gasket maker along the whole gasket, looking back I'm thinking this was only supposed to be for the half moons. The manual didnt really specify just had the tip but did some googling and worried now it wont seal correctly. Also for next time any advice for keeping the top part of the gasket in the cover without falling off during install.Thoughts?

First off no question is a stupid one if it keeps you from making a mistake. That's why this forum is here.
Its OK to us gasket maker but some people make the mistake of using too much. I put a thin line all around gasket on one side then smooth out with my finger to make sure it will not ooze out. Usually with gaskets you don't need sealent too. But just a little never hurts. Also with no sealent to keep gasket in place use a little smear of grease or oil in one spot just to hold in place.. But make sure you don't grease the whole gasket.

Thanks for the help, so just on the half moon side for the gasket maker and then do you have a recommendation for the grease to keep it in the valve cover for install, dielectric? Plain old? You dont add gasket sealant to the top of the gasket as well, correct?

If its a one piece gasket and your not gonna use gasket maker just rub a little motor oil with your finger around the whole surface of the gasket to make sure its not dry it helps it stay in place and seal better. if your gonna use gasket maker like I said rub a little bit with your finger around the whole gasket. Put gasket on cylinder head then put on valve cover and you should be good to go. Some times if you only use gasket maker in one spot it won't seal. Due to it being just a tiny bit thicker in that one spot.

Great! Thank you for the help! Im a bit of a worrier and perfectionist, makes wrenching so much more difficult. Thank you for taking the time.

I found it less difficult on my new yz to have the gasket on the head instead of the cover when reinstalling.

Also, don't forget to reattach the breather hose. I nearly did...

Great thank you. Did you use gasket sealer? And the whole gasket as or just the half moon side?
