That could've gone to shit but it looks like the air intake "barely" hit the ground.

Times have changed, as well as driving techniques. Counter steering an Indy car at 200 + MPH cost Gordon Smiley his life in nearly the same manner back in the 80's at Indy.

Hard to fight the natural instinct to save it, I guess. I believe at one point in time, old guard stressed in rookie orientation at the speedway to go with the spin, and not try to save it by counter steering. Danny Sullivan in '85 comes to mind.

A little steeper angle, and Ongais' ride may have ended differently. Not quite as direct as Smiley.

They have had a lot of hand and wrist injuries from crashes.

We (Dallara) are working on a new steering rack with a built in damper to absorb the shock and try to minimize these types of injuries.

We have built a couple of prototypes that Indycar is testing.
