How would have the championship changed had it been in chase format?

True, but fighting, mma, etc. is the "in thing" and boxing has been huge forever... I don't see MX as ever being that. But, hey, you never know

Well... That might be the 2nd point, they've not tried to do anything different since 1985, and that was a two moto format which we know for a fact confuses the fuck out of people.

Anything they could do to distinguish the classes and make it more exciting for Johnny-non moto is opening up to new markets... The real fans, are still real fans, and are still gonna watch no matter what. If nothing else, there's more of "them" to gain than "us" to lose. Marketing/Advertising 101.

I totally get the purist thing, but on the other hand, there is a saying that goes madness is doing the same thing over and expecting different results.

The sport isn't growing that much... it could be made more exciting for tom dick and harry by tightening things up.
It has nothing to do with being a purist. It is a season long championship. When NA$CAR chased growth they got the opposite. All of the BS has done nothing but tank their ratings. Here is a good article that has some numbers and they aren't pretty

It would be easy to make the points gap for the top 5 places equal to the finishes, no extra spread. That alone would keep it closer.
I think most of you are missing the point that the races gets boring. It's not just the season. I could care less about all the riders that don't belong.

Put 80 riders into the field riding whatever they want or whatever age. 4 heats of 20. Let the top 10 advance to 2 semis of 20. The top 10 from each semi make the main. That's it, no watching the scrubs fighting it out. Just the best of the best. What we pay to see.

They don't let Tiger Woods keep playing if he doesn't make the cut.

Like all sports, Supercross faced several changes over the years most notably to the racing format. In the beginning, Supercross embraced Motocross' then three-moto format. The rider with the best overall won. Future formats included the addition of heat races, semis and even four 20-man heat races where the top 50 from those races went on to the main. The last format change occurred in 2007.

Engine sizes also changed over the years. The 500cc engine lasted only two years but the 250cc engine held on strong eventually giving-way to the pinnacle 450cc class in 2006 won by none other than Ricky Carmichael. In 1985, the West and East classes emerged featuring the 125cc 2-stroke which morphed into today's 250 East/West class by 2007.

I'm still on the fence about a change in SX, but in the business world it isn't always as easy as saying that our company was making X amount of dollars and then this happened so that must be what caused the change in revenue.

I know during the 90's nascar went through a huge growth period where all kinds of people who were never racing fans of any kind jumped on the wagon. It's very possible that many of those new fans just fizzled out. I think nascar also raised its ticket prices to ridiculous levels too.

Your thinking could be like Ford building an all new full size SUV and it selling badly and blaming the styling department for the bad sales......Except maybe gasoline doubled in price during the same time the new truck hit the streets.
