It sounds like you're likely in your 40's or 50's and already have some aches and pains. In that case, I say do yourself a huge favor and go straight to full suspension. Damn hardtails beat the piss out of you. The hard part will be finding a decent full-susp in your price range.
44 the 18th of this month and yes I have some moto "wounds" lol. That's what I'm doing now. I'm gonna get me an education on the subject before I buy anything. I just figured I would start a topic with you guys since most of us have common interests.

I bought a Kona Cinder Cone 27.5 last year and so far I love it. I am in my early 40`s and have ridden moto for a lot of them and BMX for several years when I was younger. I found that the Cinder Cone ergo`s suited what I wanted in a mtn bike. When test riding other bikes (Rockhopper was one of them) I just felt too far over the front of the bike.
In no way am I a mtn bike expert.. I just bought what felt comfortable and in my price range. I paid $1300 taxes in CDN for the 2014 model from a local shop.

Very similar to me. I bought a very nice carbon hardtail 29'er about 2 years ago. Rode it a bunch. I started minding how much it bounced around and jarred me on the rocks and rough downhills and how it transferred every single bump straight to my hips and back when sitting on climbs. So I went and got a nice carbon full-susp bike about 8 months later. The bike I got is a 100mm travel front/rear XC bike, so not the most plush thing in the world. Designed more to be light for racing. So now I am looking for a 120-140mm travel bike. That's my experience and that's why I said just save the trouble and skip straight to full-susp.

I have a trek marlin 29er paid maybe $500 for it, its not perfect but it does good enough on the local trails. Good bang for the buck to test the waters
