I own two 2006 CRF450Rs. One I use for MX, and the other I have converted to trail riding. When I bought the recent bike for trail, the guy told me he had the rear shock lowered 1.5". When I measured the two bikes after I got it home, the bike I bought was a little lower in the rear but maybe about .5-1" (yes after I set the sag). I did not want a lowered shock so I bought a nice looking stock used shock on ebay that is supposed to also be from an 06 CRF450R. When I removed the shock from the bike, and I measured them both, they are both about 19.5" bolt eye to eye. I see no difference. I thought a lowered shock would be shorter due to the spacer that is inserted in the cartridge, right? Anyone got the length of a stock 06 shock?

Thanks,

Michael

Check the linkages and see if they're the same. The most common method of lowering a bike is with a lowering link.

Just went out and measured, and both linkages are the same length. Also, just to clarify, when I measured height, it was axle nut to point on the side panel so not lowered as a result of cut seat foam either. It doesn't really make sense. The kid I bought it from talked to me about how he lowered the shock, but its the same length as the used one I bought. I don't think they are both lowered either cause about 20" looks like the right length when I see some photos of other used shocks next to a tape measure on ebay. Maybe this shock wasn't lowered??

A lowered shock should measure shorter, right?

Yes, it should be a shorter distance from eye to eye, but it only takes a few mm on the spacer to get results on seat height. I lowered ours 2mm and it was very noticeable when installed.

Ok. That might make more sense then. I just been ball parking my measurements eye to eye, and if we are talking about 2-3mm, thats only about .1" or

Why don't you just mount it up and measure the height?

You can theorize , or you can.measure.
