I think it is good to run the #1......bring back the old numbering system like someone else said, that was part of the the fun as a kid to relearn everyones numbers the first few rounds.

does this apply for SX or just an MX Sports change for next summer's Nationals?

In Canada you run the assigned number. You finish 8th OA ... you run 8 the next year. I like it personally.
To me its a goal to get a certain plate, makes it worth something.

Yeah the whole idea is to showcase the National champ, and spectators who are new or not up to date on the riders seem to figure out that #1 must be a good rider. I like it to because I can look at a riders number and figure out last years placing.

Reed was planning on running the #1 before the new rules were released.

Whats Coming for Supercross '09

Numbers
You’re going to see a new policy adopted where the Supercross Champion and the Lites East and West Champions will be required to run the number one plates. That will make it easy for the casual fan to identify the champions on the track, and it also helps the American distributors showcase their riders. For example, Chad Reed will be running the number one in ’09, but will still hold onto his familiar 22, and return to it when he’s no longer champion.
