Can you imagine how long it would be before your old lady let you touch her if you beat up on a poor little girl?

i'll tell you what bro, i've come across dudes on horseback on some of the trails around here and it scares the living shit out of me. all it would take is one slight action from the horse and dude is going to be fucked up. whenever i come across them i shut off my engine and try to get off the trail. spooky stuff for sure.

that horse in that video has zero fucks to give about the sound of a dirt bike, but that certainly isn't the case with all horses.

also, anyone doubting a horses ability to go from stop to full speed back to stop, quicker than a bike, is in denial.

Who here likes riding horses? I used to say if I ever had access to a horse I would never need to ride MX again but now I realize I just really like riding horses AND dirt bikes.

I rode English Saddle: Dressage, jumping and cross country for a few years in my early 50's. Did a 2 day Fox Hunt in Georgia (rode hilltopper)

When I took lessons I was informed that all my years of riding dirt bikes helped with my contact with the horse....I was sensitive to the information I was receiving via and from my contact points (legs, calves, butt, hands) thus the translation of how to direct the bike vs the horse came easily.

It was an awesome experience. Do I want a long term relationship with a horse...nope as they are much more costly than a bike!!!

No to mention they are very similar to dogs in personality and you get very attached. I have the mx track and I have a friend/neighbor I help from time to time that has 15-20 horses at his place any any time. So I get to visit the horses and don't have to pay for feed. They were unfortunate and had a tornado hit the barn this summer. If anyone would like to help them out here's a link. I'll be helping to rebuild when we get more supplies.

Half our property is horses and half is MX track. My daughter rides Eventing at a very high level & also trains horses. XC jumping is every bit as gnarly as MX. What's funny is at events they have people riding all over the course running scores & errands on pitbikes while riders are going through the course. No one thinks twice about it.....................

I come across a lot of horses on the trail and i do the identical thing. And they still are spooked.

Funny you say that. My wife rides in rodeos all the time. In high school she was a trick rider and did all the flips and standing up on the horse and what not. She continued a little after high school but then switched to barrels. Now she has switched to team roping and she's not all that bad at it. She has an awesome horse too. I went out to her dad's place to ride horses the other day and I actually had more fun than I recall having before. The wife and I are talking about buying his horse property sometime next year and I've debated learning to actually ride. I couldn't give up the dirt bike but I'm not opposed to picking up another hobby.

The problem with horses-- no brakes.
They also have a mind of their own, piss one off and they remember for a long assed time.

I like them, respect them, love to watch them run, don't mind feeding them and that sort of thing. But i'll admit, they do make me skittish sometimes. My mom's side of the family is all from a rodeo background and have horses and i believe the old saying when they tell me that the horses can sense it when you're not confident around them, because i definitely am not confident around them and it shows. I've pretty much just accepted the fact that some people are horse people and some are not...and i am not.

I have a question for all of you guys that ride horses. I'll admit this may be an absolutely dumb question, so if it is, just let me know and i won't be offended and we can move on, haha. My question is: do any people in the equestrian world wear any sort of neck brace? This question is not intended to be the typical neck brace validity argument. It's just a question as to whether people wear any sort of neck protection or not in the equestrian world. Anyways, carry on.

Nice forward going XC course and some great fences, intermediate right? Nice go too.

My guy would probably go over backwards at the moose fence.

Body protection of any sort is not worn by many in the rodeo world. Just chaps and boots for the most part. Equestrian riding where they're jumping and whatnot, I believe they wear helmets more commonly but other than that, most do not wear any sort of protection.

Those dudes (and ladies) are pretty ballsy and i gotta tip my hat to them. I've seen a few of the bull riders and bareback guys at some of the local rodeos where the vests (like the ones mini riders where) and some of them with the hockey type masks, but definitely not all of them. I'd be wrapped up like a Fed Ex package, haha

For many years "eventers" have worn a type of body armor when going cross country [eventing is 3 phases, dressage, XC and show jumping]. Because of a number of deaths and bad injuries a type of inflatable vest is now mandatory at the advanced levels and worn by some at the lower levels.

The vest deploys via attached cord when the rider is throw from their horse.

Funny you say that. I'm far from a horse person and I definitely respect horses. I walk plenty far behind them and don't ever turn my back on them for them to bite me.

The first time I visited my now father inlaw's place to ride a horse, his horse tried to bite me while I wasn't looking. The only thing I saw was the old man grab the horse's reins, slap the shit out of it and backed the horse out of the stable with the horse doing all kinds of bucking. The old man just stayed in control of that horse no matter what it did. You could tell that horse knew he was in trouble. I learned two lessons that day. Don't turn your head to a horse and never piss the old man off.

It's very easy to get in trouble with horses. The same old man was in the hospital a few months later because he saw a little girl walking behind a horse and went to shield her from the horse and low and behold, that horse decided to kick. Punctured his lung, and broke 5 or 6 ribs. Had he not been there, the girl would have been kicked in the head. Horses are as fun as they are dangerous.

Yeah. I guess I put the :08 guys in a different category. Definitely have to have protection when riding a bucking horse or bull.

That's the same vest my daughter wears. She has used it a couple times, unfortunately. Like Spartacus said helmets are mandatory for all eventing including dressage & a vest is also mandatory for XC......................
