Hey guys I've got a 96 KTM 360 sitting in my garage just wasting away, been thinking about building/bringing this thing back to life and doing LL's on it next yr for shits and giggles. I was gonna buy a CR250 but thought WTF I have this beast sitting here. I don't know jack shit about it performance wise, I've ridden Hondas my entire life. It does have linkage rear and tooth pick Marzzochi inverted forks. Any insight on this thing?

My dad had one and loved it. First big bore two stroke I ever swung a leg over. But I never took it out on a track, she was only ever a desert bike.

However, he did and one of the forks literally broke open after over shooting a jump at Perris. Laughing

They were very hard to get the jetting right. KTM used the same class for the 250,300and the 360z wants enough volume in the cases to work right. The forks are like you said toothpicks and very flexy. If you could find a decent go art frame you could kill someone that way though.

LMAO! It's funny you say that I was thinking of taking the motor and putting it in a shifter Kart chassis if the rebuild ended up being a bad idea. Those chicken shit forks do look suspect , Well thanks for the info/warnings haha, I'll buy a CR250.

Now your talking. I have an old skidoo 440 air cooled motor I want to build a cart around. I bet that thing would be scary!

We had an old Tony Kart wit a KT100 Yami in it and that thing was fast!! We went to a track day at Firebird Raceway here in Phoenix and a hand full of guys had KX500's in there shifter karts. They used the dragstrip as the main straight and those guys were hauling the mail. I don't know if you have ever drove a shifter but damn those things handle like know other.

Yes I have they are very crazy fast. I had one if the old Yamaha 100 spec karts back in the day. They were damn quick too. Someone stole it back when I lived in Denver. Now I'm thinking maybe find a yerfdog two seater with suspension for this 440. We had a stock one I bought for my kids when I bought the track but it was a stock 150 4 stroke single OHC 2 valve and it was a dog. With the skidoo engine it would fly.

A KTM 300 motor in a CRF250R chassis sounds like perfection, to me.

Yes a modern 300sx with some massaging maybe the perfect bike right there.

Ha! I had a 87 maybe 88 Interceptor. Mine wasn't the full fairing though, it had the little square headlight with the small fairing around it. I always thought the smaller front wheel was so cool. This was back in 97 I think I was 20yrs old. I thought I was hot shit.Laughing

The 360 was a great bike I raced it in 96 in our state series here 10 rnds then went down that winter and raced the norcal series got allot of holeshot's on that bike it smoke's a 300 . Probably one of my all time favorite motor's if you can hang on. I think it would be great in a modern chassis the stock suspension wasn't bad but it had a big and bulky feel.

I almost killed myself on a 97 360. They tend to gyro like a 500 and they dont like to scrub at all. They also take a lot of jetting work to get to run right

I had a 96 KTM 300.

Mine had the Marzocchi Magnum 45 forks and Ohlins shock. I thought the suspension and handling was better than anything KTM put out for quite a few years after that.

The main issue with those engines was the ignition. It's a Euro SEM unit, but was notoriously unreliable if not looked after properly. In particular the ignition cover will leak, even when washing the bike. Make sure it's well sealed, I even used to take the cover off and let the ignition dry out if I thought it might have gotten wet.
