Any of you guys remember a local from KY named Gene Stephenson that rode for Gentleman Jim's Suzuki? He raced in the early to mid 70s.
Hey UK - Do you recall anything about Gene Stephenson after his racing career? Apparently he went on to open a hole in the wall performance shop in Taylor Mill, KY called Moto Tech. I own a 1999 KTM 125 that the original owner had tuned by Moto Tech, so was curious to learn more about both Gene and the Moto Tech shop (which is no longer around today)

Great thread guys. I raced Mid Ohio, Glen Este, however mostly KY. at Twin Bridges, Darlington, Slygo, I was one of the few that rode a stock 1975 Rokon MX 340cc and a 1975 Cooper 250cc Enduro stripped down for MX (pre Gary/Don Jones ISLO AMMEX) MotoX and Hare scrambles. AND WON! What you lack in suspension (4" rear 6" front), you compensate with throttle, 90 degree full on! Brakes are optional.
250cc class and Open class back to back motos every weekend for 5 years. Sponsored by Bohart Cycle Sales Hebron, KY. Great memories. Thanks for the read. BRAAAAAAP! BRAAAAAAP!

Jim Settles bought a place down here in Owen County, KY. (just up the road from me) He raised emus but built a MX track but I don't know if he ever ran sanctioned AMA races at this location. Lannie Settles and I became good friends in the Mobile Home and Double wide business, I was a home builder/on site sewage disposal installer. We both got busy raising a family and had to step away from racing for a few years. Jim Settles was a great guy on a personal friend bases. We were already friends from The Greater Cincinnati Northern Kentucky Motorcycle Dealers Association. JIm's quote: "Money doesn't buy everything, but poverty buys nothing". Jim gave $thousands away to local causes to help the poor. I can't think of anything bad to say about the Settles Family, great folks, better neighbors. Gentleman Jim lives on in our fawn memories. BRAAAAAAAAAAP!

This is a really old thread. But the track is now called Buckeye Hills. The two races last year were cancelled due to weather and not being able to get the track ready.

They do have two races scheduled this year in the Race Ohio MX Buckeye Series. Scott Plesinger and his crew pretty much run it and handle all the prep. Should be good this year.

Scott also runs East Fork MX in New Vienna not to far from Dirt Country. Dirt Country is not holding any races this season for the first time I can ever remember. They are planning on doing some renovations and re-opening in 2020.

I still have both my race ready 1975 Rokon and Cooper, anyone down for a holeshot? Let's find a local track that will entertain a 60 years+ senior citizen handycapable moto. Ya still got grit? Yeah, consider that a challenge.

Bill, I am sure old Henry Gref would pull one of his old CZs out and take you up on the challenge. He is still racing them. He is over seas now I believe riding some vintage races.

I also have my WR 450 for lawn dart competition. Just throwing that out there. I'm ready for a gate drop... OR, we can just cruise on the Harley's/Honda's/whatever with two wheels and engine, for a few hundred miles. Daytona is only 1200 miles...

Bill I am headed to Daytona with 2 motocross bikes for the Amateur SX and the Harley on the 7th. Plan on doing a little riding on both.

The last I heard the place was bought at auction by Middletown Honda (I think that's the name). They were going to open it back up for riding but haven't heard a thing.

Whats the latest?
we were supposed to race there last season and the season before that but it always got cancled!

That's awesome mxracerjohn250, I wish I had the funds to travel the vintage circuit. Henry Grif... wow, that's a name I haven't heard in a while. Wonder if we can get Scott Summers out for a holshot? Or Bob Jack? Bob is in southern IL. working on vintage enduro machines.

We raced there in 2017. 2018 both races were cancelled.

I had the pleasure of busting some berms with Al Baker down at Scott Summer's (Baja Team Honda) in Petersburg, KY. years ago. What a skooling. Al passed away a few years back. I tested with Gary Jones (Team AMMEX), but I was too young and stupid to realize my opportunity. I still have my AMMEX 250 in my shop (kick starter issues) but runs great once it starts.

And in case you were wondering; YES! that VLD HD 1934 74ci side valve is still my daily rider ('Bagger' lol) I'll be pulling her out as soon as the weather clears. My Dad shipped that back from Berlin Germany WWII 1944. She's s sweet ride.

Europeans came to Honda Hills whic had a 50 wide starting gate down into a long left hand sweeper with 2 jumps in it. It also had the drop off which was a level 60 mph straightaway which went into what I would call a ski jump. You jumped down 30 or 50 feet vertical. But you and the ground dropped away together. You were only 6 ir 8 feet away from the ground. It felt safer knowing you were near Earth. The bottom was a downhill landing. It was the same as jumping off a 5 story building because you never touched down until the landing way down there. Good flagging prevented injuries. This wS around 74 ir 75 when Europeans came. Europeans also came to Mid-Ohio, my favorite track. It was great to see how they rode and use that to go faster yourself.
