I know this has been discussed many times before but haven't seen it in a while and the operating systems have evolved. Wondering what you guys think now?
This is my take
iPhone:
I had the iPhone since it came out. I was there biggest supporter. Couldn't understand why anybody would use android. Nothing beat the iPhone. Then around last year I told myself if Android ever starts surpassing iPhone in features and quality phones I would jump ship-no hesitation. Well it happened last year. The Galaxy Note 3 come out and the S4. I went with the Note 3. I was also disappointed in iPhone's lack of innovation and rolling out new features. They were starting to get left in the dust. Still a great phone but others are moving along much faster pace. I also was not happy with iOS 7 and the new look.
So I jumped ship and I couldn't believe I did. Love the subtle customization of Android. The operating system finally became more stable and more appealing aesthetically and was an easy decision to jump ship. There are so many choices when it comes to Android phones but only a few really stand out as worth it. (HTC one, S4, S5 and Note 3).
Android:
Has come along way and it has that classic google backing where they do things that just make sense. It's the little things that Google does that just make sense and that they put into all there products and services. They are innovating fast and providing some kickass features. I have 4k video on my Note 3, I can put whatever launcher I want, I can choose what browser to launch with links(iPhone always does Safari). I can install whatever camera or gallery I want and have that launch automatically.
The thing about my Note 3 is that the default camera, gallery and other pre-installed apps are better than any others I have found on the play store so I stick with the default ones.
Windows:
I just can't stand Microsoft. I really just do not like them at all. I hate Windows 8 and therefore do not wish to use a Windows Phone. They seem kind of lost right now trying to play catch up and where they fit in with all this. Sure, people will like there Windows Phones because it's all they might really know and they are used to it and it's still a smartphone with kick ass technology but at this point it's just not for me. To be fair, I have never used it though.
Blackberry OS
From what I have seen online it looks like a killer operating system. Too bad the space is just so crowded. They will have a hard time succeeding but it looks nice.
Once iPhone starts coming out with some different size phones and a better OS I may go back. I love Apple products but there iOS is getting stale and boring. Time to revamp that sucker a little bit but it's hard to go wrong with one as well. They are great products and overall it's a wonderful OS. However, it just can't come close to what you can get with Android right now and for most people they are ok with that. It's a very easy OS to use.
One thing you can say about iPhone is everyone has the same experience and it's great for developers. Android has a million different phones so one person might be happy and another might not. They will have different experiences depending on which Android phone they buy.

Brand New Apple phones are found lacking in hardware because they pick hardware and then take over a year to design a new operating system around it. By the time the OS is ready, the hardware is out of date. Apple's source code is held under lock, key, and heavy encryption. Yahoo is currently pushing Apple hard to change their default search engine from Google to Yahoo.
All Android phones are based around AOSP. The Android Open Source Platform (AOSP) is the base OS source code that Google provides to phone companies under license. Phone manufacturers add their nifty tricks on top of AOSP to make the UI that we expect, like HTC Sense, Samsung TouchWiz, Motorola Blur. They often double or triple the size of AOSP roms(OS) after adding everything. This license usually carries no royalty if the phone company does not employ Google to help them build these custom roms. Phone manufacturer may use AOSP directly as it comes, like the Nexus line of phones developed by Google and produced by other manufacturers. Google gives away AOSP because when someone searches on an Android phone, Google Search is usually used. This induces advertisements to come up for search related requests, which is Google's main revenue machine.
Windows phones. I have no idea who uses these. They are easy to make Linux phones out of, but AOSP and iOS are also Linux based. Windows 8 sucks. Microsoft spends billions each year researching and developing things that never see the light of the outside world....
Nokia was looking to make it's own OS platform and rule the cheap smart phone market like they did with dumb phones in the 90s. That hasn't come to fruition yet.
RIM (BlackBerry) is a joke. Company is going downhill fast.
Certainly the Microsoft mobile OS isn't perfect, but it does have some advantages for business, especially. By the sound of it, 8.1 is going to bring even better integration and they're working to really trim down the windows bloat.

A few months ago I would have agreed with you about Windows 8. However, with the release of 8.1 and the documentation coming around, I've come to the conclusion that it's the best version of Windows for productivity yet. I think that Microsoft simply hasn't done enough to educate and train users on the changes. Once you understand the changes, why they were made, and some of the shortcuts and tricks to using windows 8, it's easy to love the OS. Server 2012r2 is amazing! I'm in the process of upgrading my machines to 8.1 and possibly deploying a 2012r2 machine. There is so much awesome there, I could go on about it forever. It's a really cool OS.
One thing worth mentioning that has come to be accepted is the fact that google is a data mining operation first and foremost. I have a few android devices that I'm really starting to get sick of for this reason. They are becoming aggressive in the realm of data mining, as seem with the changes on youtube and google+. They are also becoming more and more shady about giving users control over the privacy settings.
Contrary to popular belief, apple is the worst for security.

As for Steve Jobs, he got an easily treatable and removable form of pancreatic cancer that he did not operate on for 9 months. He spent that time looking into natural remedies and then needed the harshest form of oncologic surgery there is of the abdomen. He would be alive if he would have gone with the modern/scientific medicine approach.
Gues I will find out tomorrow.
When it comes to mobile devices though Android offers features that iPhone is years from releasing. Sure, most people don't care about most of them but it's still nice to have the latest technology.
It will be very difficult for me to dump my Mac though. Freaking love it.
You can't go wrong with iOS. It works for almost everyone. Tech junkies like me though I just have come to really like the features of Android. I would be happy either way though it was just time for me to try something else and see what everyone was talking about when it came to android and now I know both OS's very well.
I don't mean to speak poorly of the Nexus lines, I bought one for my gf, but they are not nearly the best phone on the market
The new HTC one m8 has touch screen buttons along the bottom of the screen that are included in into 4.95 inch screen measurement. Wasted space
I-tunes is a huge dealbreaker for me.
I have 45 gigs of mp3s and apple wants to check my licenses? Fuck off.
With that being said, there are a few issues I am having compared to my old Samsung Galaxy. It doesn't seem to get as good of service in certain areas, like at work. Service seems to come and go for some reason at work which I never really had a problem with before. Also, WiFi calling (a T-Mobile feature that allows you to use WiFi to call and text which is good for places that don't have service), seems to work when it wants to. I have it on WiFi calling right now and it just suddenly stopped working and wouldnt let me call or text even though I had WiFi and was still able to browse the internet. And you can't send MMS on WiFi calling either. Not sure if those are OS issues or hardware issues.
Although it was time for a new phone, I kind of regret buying THIS phone. I probably should have held off for a little longer for a Galaxy S5. You live and learn.
