...why in this day and age we still as a Country will not have normal relations with Cuba? And why do we continue to refuse to speak with the leadership of Countries like Iran? It baffles the mind as to why we have to throw empty threats at these countries instead of just sitting at a table and speaking.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It all started with a cage containing five monkeys.
Inside the cage, a banana was hung on a string and a
set of stairs was placed under it. Before long, a
monkey went to the stairs and started to climb towards
the banana. As soon as he touched the stairs, all of
the other monkeys were sprayed with cold water. After a
while, another monkey made an attempt with the same
result - all the other monkeys were sprayed with cold
water. Pretty soon, anytime another monkey tried to
climb the stairs, the other monkeys tried to prevent it.

After a couple of days, the cold water was removed. One
monkey was removed from the cage and replaced with a
new one. The new monkey saw the banana and wanted to
climb the stairs. To his surprise and horror, all of
the other monkeys attacked him. After another attempt
and attack, he knew that if he tried to climb the
stairs, he would be assaulted.

Next, another of the original five monkeys was removed
and replaced it with a new one. The newcomer went to
the stairs and was attacked. The previous newcomer took
part in the punishment with enthusiasm! Likewise, a
third original monkey was replaced with a new one, then
a fourth, then the fifth.

Every time the newest monkey took to the stairs, he was
attacked. Most of the monkeys that were beating him had
no idea why they were not permitted to climb the stairs
or why they were participating in the beating of the
newest monkey.

After replacing all the original monkeys, none of the
remaining monkeys had ever been sprayed with cold
water. Nevertheless, no monkey ever again approached
the stairs to try for the banana.

Why not?

Because as far as they know that's the way it's always
been done around here.

I agree with you, so does Obama
But according to many on here, talking to those we oppose is bad.

We will not normalize relations with Cuba because of fear of upsetting Cuban voters in the the battleground state of Florida. Florida is key every election and the Cuban vote is huge. Its all stupid because if you ask me. Lots of money can be made made in Cuba without firing a shot and if we don't get it Russia or China will.

For most of the time, the US does not know why they do things.
That monkey story is a great example of why!

Lot's of tourist flights to Cuba from Canada.

It's become a very popular destination. It's also become very modernized compared to 10-20 years ago. Lot's of European cars, no more 50's era American cars rolling around on their last legs. You guys would hardly recognize it.

You guys that naive?

US: Hey, Ayotollah, let's sit down and talk.
Iran: Ok, here we are.
US: What do you want from us?
Iran: Lay off our nuclear program.
US: Well, we believe you're trying to build nuclear weapons, and we can't support that, nor can the international community.
Iran: Oh no, we're not building nukes...it purely a power generation system.
US: Well, golly gee...........it seems that you're enrichening enough weapons grade fissible material to power the world 3 times over....what's up with that?
Iran: Oh well, you know.....we just want a bit extra on hand you know...no nukes though.
US: Can we maybe check out your nuke facilities? We'll sign off on an end to sanctions if we can check.
Iran: Nope, we told you, we don't build nukes.
US: Prove you don't!
Iran: Prove we do!

And thus end the talks........just like every fucking thread on Vital.

You guys hold up these Obama utterings as if there some kind of sacrament or something.

The US has never refused to talk to anyone. With Iran, and Cuba....we have made talks conditional........if they aren't going to demonstrate good faith.......why bother? Without a good faith demonstration, the discussion is just a big waste of time.........and ends in "prove it".

We've offered tons of carrots, and very few conditions to engage Iran over the years.......Reagan, Bush I, Clinton, even the current Bush........the Iranians have always reacted the same way........they'll happily take our carrots.......but they won't open up their facilities to inspection.

Even us, the chinese, the russkies, pakistan, and india all allow international inspections......it's not like we're doing anything exceptional to them.

Really, sometimes it's kind of sickening.....how many people want to blame the US and it's government for everything. Like Iran.......they're just the fucking epitomy of honesty, and integrity........totally up front. They've never done anything wrong.......poor innocent Iran..........being picked on by the big US bully.

Far as Cuba........just stupid. We should have simply opened trade with Cuba, and dropped the whole game.....back in '91. If we'd done so...it'd be a fucking US State today by proxy (kind of like Canada).

No reason for Cuba other than politics.....nobody wants to piss off the cuban vote...and the old school cubans do want to see the pressure on cuba let off........they want the regime to collapse.

Well fuck....I say, ain't nothing that will collapse that shit faster than 10 years of American vacationer dollars and investment in that country...

Yeah we are in the CONCACAF region of FIFA, its joke really its always US and Mexico then the rest. 1 nil in Cuba isn't too shocking other than the fact it was dark and the pitch was shit due to the rain.
