Got myself a cool graphic kit but my plastics are pretty scratched up, been running with bare plastics for a few years. should I try sanding them first with like a 400 to 800 to 1200 grit before applying the graphics? I just want them to stick and not start peeling more so than seeing the scratches.

Scratches make air bubbles when you apply new graphics. Heating and venting the bubbles with helps a little, but they still show through.

Sanding your plastics will fade the color in my experience.
