Nice old 'trail....thanks for sharing.
My neighbor just recently acquired and pretty nice 75' MR50. He's not a bike guy per say (he thought it was a four stroke!) and I saved him from blowing it up after he put straight gas in it. I also told him not to run it until he changed the undoubtedly dried out crank seals. I'm sure he'd be willing to sell it but be warned, he is a bit of a weasel and will want a good dollar for it.

Heres my 1974 MR 50
Not a total show room restoration but a nice running MR with many OEM parts.
I would part with it for the right $$$
Here is a picture I took of my '74 mini elsinore in my back yard back in 1975.
Here is my 1974 that I restored back in 2008....it now sits on display in my basement!

Made a plate for the top fork plate and mounted regular cross-brace handlebars.
I wheelied that thing in third gear everywhere until one day I pulled it over, in third, on a paved street.
Tore off the seat, bars, tank. Can't recall where it ended up.
The reason I don't want to use re-mx is for the very reason you stated and the fact that I have so far been able to use OE only. I had the tank repainted by my Porsche guy but I don't want ANY reproduction parts if I can get away with it.
If anyone has experience with re-mx product, please describe what you purchased (e.g. .25 piston and rings). I am in no way discounting the quality of re-mx. I just have no experience with the vendor.
Also, I found the original microfiche for the bike but would love to have a service/parts manual. Anyone have one they can email or upload to a document storage site?

As for NOS, good luck. Over the two years or so that I've been trolling MR50 stuff, MANY items are now out of stock in the Honda warehouses....and are gone for good. Good example.... Want a set of NOS grips?? I have a pair. How much you wanna pay??? I bought fair amount of stuff several years ago when I started my resto just because I saw this coming.
AFAIK, there are not any other significant vendors for MR50 stuff. I have his plastics and several other parts on mine. Good quality. Expensive as hell, but good quality, and the only game in town.
Have fun with your project. They're cool little bikes. I still remember when I worked in the Honda shop in '74 when we opened the first crate of these things......wow! Truly a mini-Elsinore!!!
I can tell you from my restoration experience that all the parts I bought from re-mx (fenders, spokes, sprocket cover, front number plate strap, seat cover, rear sprocket) were very good, high quality reproductions. The plastic is about dead on for color and look, but you have to drill out the holes yourself. Other than that, Dan has about the best reproduction stuff (and maybe the only) out there.
As far as going all OEM....good luck! There is not much at all left available from Honda at all, and I am very fortunate that I got what I did back in 2008 because a lot of the parts I purchased from my dealer are now n/a. Finding all OEM is going to require a lot of time and deep pockets! Just a few examples that I have seen in the last month....OEM throttle cable on ebay went for $127.50, and a brand new old stock front fender went for $267.99!! I wish I would have been buying up and storing MR50 parts 10 years ago! There are still a lot of old stock Honda parts for the engine that you can find on ebay, and again, I think re-mx is your next best alternative. Good luck on your resto, and please post up some pictures of your progress!

Man, I can still remember the smell of that thing. My dad took me out in a pasture (we had a dairy) with a hill and I would coast down the hill with it running in neutral, but I was too chicken to ride it back up. After pushing me up the hill 3 times my dad was like "Okay, you gotta ride it up the hill or I'm taking it back." Who knows how serious he was, but I rode up that hill and was hitting 2nd by the end of the day.
I'm tall and I rode that thing till 5th grade. Talk about ringing it out!
I really tried to find one in decent shape for my boys, but just couldn't find one. My 9 year old is on a JR80 which is that sweet, mellow type of 2-stroke, but he's moving up to his brother's TTR125 next year so that leaves me as the lone 2-smoker.
Maybe when they have kids?
All the motor "needs", and I'm probably being a little obsessive.. is a set of rings. I was too scared to crank it without looking first. Even all the original nuts, bolts and everything was there. The dude said it ran and went to kick it but I told him I would kick him if he started it.
