Ping in RH:

We scooped the whole selling of the supercross series thing, now I’m getting some dirt out of Chicago that will put a very different twist on the “Supercross” class this year. Apparently, the premier class is going to be open to 450s, 250 two-strokes, AND 250Fs this year. The open format, which is very similar to the U.S. Open’s, will allow riders to choose whatever bike they want to ride in the premier class. The bikes must be homologated, though, and that means you can’t blow out a little bike to a 350 and run that, like some teams have done at the X Games the last couple of years. Obviously, most of the best riders will opt to ride the 450s, but where this rule will come in to play is when Lites riders want to get some time in on the opposite coast. For example, if Trey Canard wants to ride a couple of West rounds to get warmed up, he can sign up in the Supercross class on his 250F and compete. Or if Brett Metcalfe wants to keep racing once the series goes to the East, he can do the same thing there. Remember the problem they had last year with gates not being full in the 450 class? This could help remedy that problem.

Speaking of Metcalfe, it looks like the speedy Aussie is not going to stay at Pro Circuit as expected. My sources say Brett has already signed a letter of intent (possibly a contract) with the GEICO/Factory Connection team. They lost Josh Grant to JGR and have quite a bit of money to play with (about $850,000) to hire another rider. Good news for Brett. That leaves a spot open at Pro Circuit, and I don’t even think Mitch Payton knows who will fill it right now.

quit tryin to take credit for this amazing revelation.....we dont count innuendo around here! Smile

I really do not like this idea. But then again I have never liked change at all. I say since the 250f get to race the 450f then we need another class. UMMMM a 125cc step stone class! BRAAP.

The thing is, a 250f is going to get smoked at the start. So even if you are faster on the 250f, in a race situation you are going to have to come up from behind.
I don't see that happening except if JS gets bored and decides to ride a small bike.

As far as running only one class in the future, that wouldn't be half bad.
The 450 class is boring these days because unless something happens, you know ahead of time who is going to win. Add several hungry light riders to the mix and the racing is bound to improve. It would suck for the "big boned" riders though.
Who is this JS you speak of?

Then the 250f willl become the premiere class like it happened 20 years ago after the 250cc were faster than the 500. LETS BRING BACK THE 125cc 2 strokes for 010.

When all the japanese factories start to run their main riders in the 250 GP series, the 500 became somewhat the class for older guys or privateers before they killed entirely. The MX3 class is that right now.

I went back and looked at some of the east coast rounds last year(lap times) and the top 450 riders still had an advantage over the 250f's. Anyone who plans on a podium will choose the 4 fiddy in the "premier" class. Just sayin

I'm super pumped! I love this!

Someone was thinking, I never thought of this scenario... really like it!

James Stewart. He is fast enough to start last and still win a SX.

My opinion, I don't think it's good.
To many years at the test track, the
SX track prove that to me.
It should've also have proven it to the
"Rules makers".
I'm shocked actually.
I could be wrong. That's true.
I believe I'm not.
Different power delivery.
Different torque delivery.
Very few "Lites" guys lap times
overlap the top 450 guys.
I think it's dangerous.
Maybe not everywhere, but it's there
waiting to happen.
Bad call!
Just like in the amateur's with the 250F's
racing the 250 2 stks. "Gimme a break".
But in racing, all hit the wall at times.
Even "Rules"!
That's how we improve & hopefully learn.
But I think it's wrong.
Also, having guys pop in & out only hurts
the riders doing that whole series.
Again, it's LAME!
Dave O.Wink
"Heck, maybe baseball or football players should be allowed
to jump in & out of each others deal as they please too......"Shocked
"Upsetting the balance is a terrible thing to do"....Shocked

The Open & the X-Games are the examples I'm sure they went off of.
"Poor examples"..........Dry

"Again, rules are rules & I'll support those & it 100%...."Wink

Doubt any 250 two strokes being a part of the premier class.

Most tracks are not like US Open; only two manufacters make and sell 250 twos in the US that meet AMA homologation rule....YZ and KTM SX 250s.

The four banger combination would be interesting to say the least.

i like it. the ama did something good.

do the mxgp's allow this? i mean, they run "worx" rules dont they, you dont have to build a bike that is max cc's right?

now all the ama has to do is create a single hybrid sx/mx "open" series that the u.s.a. can call its premier championship and i'd be happy. (and of course get rid of the "lites" moniker).

Dave O's post made me think of a standing rule right now.

Don't you need like 100 points to be eligible to ride the big bike class? Will this still be enforced? It will definately limit eligible riders to ride both classes.

Dave, it will be fine if you're talking about the faster/slow riders on the same track... it's always been like that even with a displacement class.

This is stupid.

We used to have defined classes (125, 250,500) and now we have a mixed bag of nuts of run whatever you brung and a 125 class that is now the Lites or MX2 or something.

I follow the sport and can't figure it out.
How do they expect to have casual spectators watch & know?

How do you tell a friend that Mike Larocco won the 500cc championship years ago and then you have to tell them that doens't exist anymore but there is the "MX Class" which is now going to be the "MX1" class like overseas but it is going to be different cause we have all of these other bikes that can run in the same class but one of those types of bikes has a class all to its own.
Got it?
Me neither...

I did not agree earlier but maybe this sport is moving backwards.

mx1 = up to 450cc
mx2 = up to 250cc

pretty simple

(btw, is the ama really going to go to a mx1/mx2 name-format?) that would be awesome news to me.

Yes, he isn't that well known outside of the US. Just check the MX "Des" nations, he should do very well. Maybe a chance at a podium...
