Thanks. Yes I do ride it occasionally, mainly at the VMXdN at Farleigh Castle, England/

I love that bike, jt!

I'm rounding up parts for the '86 and '87 CR250 projects I've acquired and looking at bikes like yours is an inspiration. I need to find gray fork guards like you've got-where did you get them?

Hi vet323, thanks for the compliments. I also have a similar 1986 CR250 and am building an 86 CR500 Bailey MXdN replica. You can get the fork, disc and reservoir guards from DC plastic. You will have to make the disc and reservoir guard mounting bolts and get the Showa stickers made yourself. I've sold over 100 sets. Here is my 1986 CR250. I don't mean to hijack the original thread.

Thanks again. When my 500 is done I will sticker them all as the 86 MXdN bikes. If anyone has any detailed photos of those bikes and helmets please show them as I want to see all the sticker details.

Your bikes are beautiful, jt! Thanks for the heads up about the DC Plastics guards. I saw them on their site, but don't really trust the plastic quality from that place. My bikes will be racers, but I want them to look respectable at least (not expecting your level of finish).

About 5 years ago I contacted them to see if they could copy an old disc guard I had, they said yes. I had an original TMV from Holland, the same as Pro Circuit and White Bros sold back in the eighties. I also had a reservoir guard. The quality is the same as the original but the colour is slightly lighter, that was the closest they had. They mount by replacing the brake calliper mount bolts that have been drilled and tapped through the centre and mounted through with small screws. Make sure they send you the older style reservoir guard. They sent me the later banjo style guard for nineties bikes. This has a step down where the hose exits the reservoir. The eighties style has a straight exit.

I found this 1987 CR 125 this summer and it's next up for restoration. It will be tough however since the bike is in very poor neglected condition for it's age......kidding of course, I was very happy to see it was all original and should be an easy restore (I hope).

Very popular bike in the day and now this side of the pond.

I had an 86 and 87 CR125 (back when they were new), rank at the very top of the 40 or so bikes I have owned over too many years. On my scorecard only the 83 KX80 was more dominant during its time than those 2 Honda's.

Wish I could find one in the condition MXM found his but don't think that is happening....The water pump cover is rotted out. I do have another one from a bike I picked up about 2 years ago that I can use, it isn't perfect but it doesn't have hole or leak. The bike runs. The "insulator" that goes from the carb to the cylinder has been silicone up, assuming it was cracked. The one on my donor bike is also cracked so if I want to make a "runner" I will need to find one of those. I think I'm going to try and make it a runner, not anything like yours or others on here restorations but something I can take out every now and then and relive my youth....the rest of the time I'll stick with my KTM. Did all DG pipes have the "badge" on them. I'm assuming this one has a DG pipe but there is no label on it and no holes or weld spots were a badge was put on. When the ATAC chamber was eliminated with the aftermarket pipe was there supposed to be a plug where the bolt you take out to disconnect the "rack" for the ATAC actuation before taking off the cylinder? This one just has an open hole there??

Carb insulators are available from hotfootmoto.com if not they will make one for you. I would also give a 1987 CR125 insulator a try. I have a VForce reed block from one on my 86.
The pipe on my bike in the photo is stock with the paint removed. I have a Pro Circuit pipe that by-passes the ATAC valve and it came with a new spigot to bolt to the cylinder, this covers the ATAC rack hole. I didn't remove the rack, I just unbolted the ATAC chamber and exhaust spigot.
I have a new DG pipe on my CR500 and I removed the badge by carefully filing through the welds.

Yak651 I think the only difference between the 86 and 87 right side case/ water pump cover is that the 87 has a removable clutch cover for easy access. Now if this is true I know a way to fix the corrosion issue, you can use any year CR125 cover from 1987-2003 and they all work after changing out your ATAC arm. I used a 1997 CR 125 side cover and I just bolted my ATAC arm in and it fits perfect, the part is the same they just changed the #'s because they changed the arm in later years, but the old arm will go right in place no problem. I would use one from 1990 and later because they are aluminum and won't corrode. Then you just paint it black and you are set to go. Yes I did get lucky with this 87 cr 125, it's in amazing condition!

Thanks for the info guys, I will look into that when I get further along. Maybe I'll make a thread, but don't think I have the talent you all do and don't want to embarrass myself showing my results. Looks like Hotfoot only has the insulator up to '85. Anyone know the difference between '85 and '86 and if the '85 one will work?

The 87 cover is completely different and will not fit an 86. Later covers up to 97 (maybe beyond) will fit the 87. Also the ATAC power valve system is completely different.

I liked MXM's info better! I was looking at ebay and there were a lot of inexpensive covers from '91-'97. Thanks for giving the correct info before I went and bid on something... I have to dig out the old engine I have, from what I remember the cover was ok and that was the reason I kept it. If it isn't I'll probably just part this out as I dont' want to spend $500 on a cover along with everything else I would need to do. If the old cover I have is ok I'll probably attempt a rebuild.

Thank god I said "I think", phew. So the 86 cover is not the same at all? I thought it was the outer clutch cover access point only. Thanks for the input JT Racing, is it the whole side mating surface that's different or are the water pump intake hoses different? Just wondering.

Ok upon further inspection I figured out what is different, sorry about the hope of a cheap fix. Maybe sell the 86 and get a 87 instead? hehe

The 87 cover is completely different and won't physically fit. The right crankcase where it joins the clutch cover is miles different. You only have to look at the clutch cover gasket to realise this.
They can be repaired with jb weld and a die grinder. If the corrosion is very bad you will need to check for radiators for clogging. Some people recommend cutting the top and bottom tanks off and riding it through. You will need a very good welder. Seeing that Chinese radiators are around $100 a pair, it's your choice.

JTracin, thanks for the heads up on hotfootmoto. I emailed them in regards to an intake boot for my 95 CR250, what do you think the chances are they will make one? Those bikes are very popular now for restore and Im hoping the chances are good.

Great thread. I picked up a non running 85 cr125 for $100. I picked up a used stator and got it running. The bike is very decent and has a good condition seat and plastics (Im sure they are original) I pulled the water pump and found very minor pitting, total of about 8 pits slightly bigger then a pin head. Im going to leave it alone.
This bike will be my "mascot" for vintage bike awareness here in BC Canada. There seems to be very little vintage/old school activity in this part of the world.
Thanks

Use good quality coolant or there is a product that contains no water (I can't remember the name). Hotfootmoto or their associate copied the 1986 chain guides and slippers for me as I sent them a NOS set to copy.

So is this cover useable? Looks like someone did a patch job. The other cover has a lot more pitting (but inside looks better) and a hunk out of the case and a repair of the clutch area
