There will always be people doing it the extreme way. Probably why USA, Russia and China manage to get top athletes in almost every sport (look at the olympics medal counts). But this does not show the full story. This is a handfull of people who thinks forcing KIDS into something because they as a parent wants them to succeed more than the kid itself. I acctually know a guy who won at Nationwide and the PGA tour and he was NOT raised like that. He took his bike to the golf course every day since he could ride a bike because HE wanted too, not his parents. Sweden have had alot of success in golf and similar sports over the year and we as a country do not encourage this kind of behavior, kids must be kids.
The difference is that moto parents are white trash and have no concept of the term "Return on Investment" while these parents are smart in the sense that if you make it as a golfer ,you can make serious money and its not a life threatening sport. How many golfers turn into drunks / dope fiends because of their injuries??
Motocross racers dont make $$ unless they're top 10, top 5 maybe.

OMG, that was sooo funny, thx for posting. I have great memories of hitting balls at the driving range with my dad and all I wanted to do was hit the car/cart thing that picked up the balls. I'd sit there waiting for that car to come out and the second it did, I'd waste my whole bucket of balls taking shots at that thing. My grandpa/dad loved golf then and still do.
Dawg-moto parents are far from white trash, you'd be surprised at some of their backgrounds and income. A child is not an investment, the ROI you speak of makes you sound ignorant to parenting. Anything moto or golf families do, any sport for that matter, should be out of passion for that sport/hobby vs trying to make money in the end off of your child.
35 Mom, don't let people get the best of you. If you enjoy moto, great. Golf, football, soccer, baseball...whatever, supporting your kids in whatever they like is all that matters. Everyone will have an opinion and for the record, I'll take camping in the desert with motorcycles any day. There was a comedian that said "if you aint paying my bills, then f**k you" and I have to apply that here.

i dont think you understand the socioeconomics of the types of people who ride motocross and those who play golf. golf families aren't "contractors" who spend all their money so their kid can go race dirtbikes lol. the types of people who play golf are corporate executives, ceos, finance types, etc...im not saying all moto parents are white trash, but the vast majority of them are in my opinion.
sometimes they even have the nerve to come on here and ask for "donations" to help their kid get to the races..lol
being a motocross racer isn't a career, its a waste of money. even if you're a local pro and win everything you might be lucky to break even. there is no long term benefit and the risks aren't worth it..unless you're a RV,RD,JS,etc
i understand your son is a privateer but if you think hes going to make any money or make a long term career out of MX you're sadly misguided. it is unfortunate that the state of the economy is so terrible because if this was 2003 and not 2013 your kid might be able to pocket some money (a livable wage) and have his expenses paid for. if i had a kid who was good enough to race nationals, id give him 2-3 years to make something happen. after that, time to grow up and get a real job
the credit boom is over and this is the new normal.

I have no dog in this fight but I clicked on your screen name to see who you are and wanted to give you a heads up regarding your BIO.
I have been around motocross since the late 70's when my then boyfriend, now ex husband Joe raced. I was always a "tomboy" and have rode since I was young.(If you see me at a races ask to look at my chin.. def moto scar from when I was 9 yrs old! )
We became involved again in 1999 when my son Joey was old enough to race. Since that day I have been having the time of my life. We are a family that eats, breathes and lives motocross...and I wouldnt have it any other way!!!
My son now at the age of 16 is a Team Yamaha rider with the greatest sponsors in the world, Mike Duclos of Rock River Powersports, Scott, Fly Racing, Engine Ice/Pro Clean,, Yoshamira (Should be = Yoshimura), Dunlop, Bel Ray, Only One Inspiration, Glissen Landscaping, The 529 Foundation, Motographx, GPMX Motocross School, Twin Air and KB5 Suspension and Mods.
For 2011 Joey will be moved up to the A class through Lorettas Lynns and wil be in the Rock River Semi for Unadilla and the last 3 MX outdoor races, He will also race both SX and MX in 2012 for them.
I cant thank all of our sponsors (PROBABLY MEANT TO ADD "ENOUGH" HERE BUT YOU FORGOT) for the help in the years leading up to what I describe as the light at the end of the tunnel...phewww we are almost there!

I don't understand the socioeconomics? That's a joke. There's a huge difference in each sport in itself. There is no comparison financially. Did you ever think people stick with MX because they love it? And I more than understand golf. It's an elitist sport. My younger brother played and did very well. My other brother was a professional snowboarder. Guess what? They both complained that only the ones with "money" rose to the top. Sound familiar? If we followed your logic there would be 5 competitors in every sport.
Yes my son would love to make a career of this, but realistically he knows he won't. But he loves to race. He's only 19.
Obviously someone or something has soured you in life to racing. Too bad there are alot of great families and friends you are missing out on.

Haven't revised that in awhile.... Thanks for the heads up
my dad was incredibly hard on me growing up racing... too hard according to a lot of my friends and people looking in, but it made me into the person i am today. sadly, when dad's money stopped pouring in, so did my enthusiasm to keep training and racing. i went to college, got a degree, and now am paying student loans for the rest of my life.
financially, i wish he would have taken me golfing. i may have made something out of it, or possibly a scholarship. i've never witnessed a scholarship from racing. that said, i would never take back growing up with my dad chewing my ass to hit a corner faster or to always push to the finish and never quit. all my friends i have because of moto. i am not still friends with one person from high-school.
My kid's getting a PW50 for Christmas this year. He'll be faster than I ever was by the time he's in high school, and if I have any influence on him at all he'll be happy to get a real job and race for fun.

^^^My kids to a "T"..........My older boy at 12 is really close to my speed. Sucks, but in a good way, I guess. I have spent a bunch of my own money having a track at our house and both my boys love to ride but know it isn't anything to make a career out of.
Locdawg, is right its a whiskey-tango sport and there is nothing wrong with that. WT comes in all flavors and income levels.............

Of course people follow their passions because they love it, in fact when/if I come into money the first thing im going to do is buy myself a new truck, trailer 8 bikes and go racing!
I just think it's incredibly stupid to home school a kid for a job that won't even pay off unless you're at the very top. Especially these days. It's one thing to get underpaid relative to other athletes, its awhole different ball game when racers are being forced to cover their own expenses, and they're on teams! Trust me, im a huge fan of this sport and have been following it since I was little and I know it takes mad skills just to even QUALIFY for a national or night show at SX but the risk to reward ratio is so pathetic these days its sad.
I listened to Jason Thomas on the PulpMX show a few weeks ago talking to Weston Peick and he's doing everything in his power to help Weston out because 10 years ago, JT was exactly where Weston is now. Putting in results on a privateer bike but the difference was JT$ was making $$, Weston is barely getting by.

Your comment on Moto parents as "white trash" is condescending, classless and uninformed. My son and I have raced in ~60 races over the past 4 years. During that time I have met hundreds of people at the races. Most of the parents are some of the nicest and most generous people around. And, if you had any clue about who actually goes to the races and walked through the pits on any weekend, you would see the level of financial commitment that many people make to go racing.
With rare exception can I think of any form of motosports where the lower tier racing classes are anything other than a money pit. That still does not make the people who choose to race "white trash". In your opinion, since motocross is such a low class sport, you should go spend your time elsewhere.
...and as an aside, I am an executive in a Fortune 500 company and have spent plenty of time on the golf course and in the board room.

Honestly now after re-reading your second post that stated "if I had a kid that was good enough to race the nationals", I would have never responded further. You have no idea what your talking about.
My problem is you generalized moto parents as white trash...and in all truth these are the most kind hearted, give you anything and help you however they can type of people. But how would you know? Tell me, did you or your son race? You clearly know who I am..

You clearly know who I am..
yes, and the financial means neccessary.
Not mortgaging my house so to buy a bunch of souped up kx85's
You won't see me asking for donations to make it to the Mini-o's

So spill it. Name number and class. My son has rode everything stock all the way thru Loretta's in the A class.
BTW that's a beautiful Dane you have in your pic. My Mom raised them, Steam was a gray. And we had a fawn Daisy that lived in our house until she was almost a year old.

i dont think you understand the socioeconomics of the types of people who ride motocross and those who play golf. golf families aren't "contractors" who spend all their money so their kid can go race dirtbikes lol. the types of people who play golf are corporate executives, ceos, finance types, etc...im not saying all moto parents are white trash, but the vast majority of them are in my opinion.
sometimes they even have the nerve to come on here and ask for "donations" to help their kid get to the races..lol
being a motocross racer isn't a career, its a waste of money. even if you're a local pro and win everything you might be lucky to break even. there is no long term benefit and the risks aren't worth it..unless you're a RV,RD,JS,etc
i understand your son is a privateer but if you think hes going to make any money or make a long term career out of MX you're sadly misguided. it is unfortunate that the state of the economy is so terrible because if this was 2003 and not 2013 your kid might be able to pocket some money (a livable wage) and have his expenses paid for. if i had a kid who was good enough to race nationals, id give him 2-3 years to make something happen. after that, time to grow up and get a real job
the credit boom is over and this is the new normal.

In your opinion, since motocross is such a low class sport, you should go spend your time elsewhere.
...and as an aside, I am an executive in a Fortune 500 company and have spent plenty of time on the golf course and in the board room.
tell me mr chairman, why haven't you mortgaged your home for jr's racing career? These people making these commitments are mortgaging their whole damn life for a dream that isn't there! You're obviously a smart guy, and you and I both know you wouldn't set your career aside for a frivolous pursuit that would have no pay off
35smom, I have no idea who you are other than looking through your posts. I don't have kids either
I live on a golf-course, thank you. Hell, all my friends with STUPID money try to get me to get them a T-time...ALL THE DAMN TIME...'cause it's suppose to be THE golf-course down here in SoCal; but, me? Oh, HELL NO! If there's time to get in one of those Goofy-Assed Carts while wearing those Goofy-Assed clothes? Well, guess what...Princess? There's a better time to be had by my Red-Neck Portagee-Fat-Ass out at Pala or Milestone. Capiche?
I grew up in a golf-course community...as a kid...in Nor-Cal.
The ONLY thing that captures the truth of the golf-course community is Caddy-F'n-Shack. PERIOD. Douche-Bags with Big Money, Huge Bar-Tabs and really bad taste. Yup. That covers it. (But, to be fair: Hottie Daughters with MB-SL's that I'd drive the shit outta...'til we got up in the hills...then I'd set the E-Brake and "talk")
So damn classic of you to make Wannabe-Elitist comments masked in the veil Socioeconomic statements. You really told us who the f'k you wannabe with that one.
So, next-time, be sure to add a little racism or some other back-handed slander. Ok, pumkin?

So go enjoy your "socioeconomics" not on a dirtbike if you think were all such "white trash"
Some people love to race dirtbikes. I know I do. Ya it's expensive we get it. People spend money doing the things they love
haha, hardly brother. Im the real deal and if you knew me growing up you'd probably say I was white trash too. I was a punk and a degenerate and I learned the hard way. I hung out with the wrong crowd and have been around people from all walks of life. from working slum jobs with convicted criminals to working in a white collar environments with super educated people.
ive met people at the races and at open practices, yes most are nice but i still think its stupid to mortgage a house and give up a career on a kid whose not even winning the local A class

Yes my son would love to make a career of this, but realistically he knows he won't. But he loves to race. He's only 19.
Obviously someone or something has soured you in life to racing. Too bad there are alot of great families and friends you are missing out on.
financially, i wish he would have taken me golfing. i may have made something out of it, or possibly a scholarship. i've never witnessed a scholarship from racing. that said, i would never take back growing up with my dad chewing my ass to hit a corner faster or to always push to the finish and never quit. all my friends i have because of moto. i am not still friends with one person from high-school.
anyway, sorry i went off on a couple tangents.
And I know quite a few corporate white collar moto dads and moms. Not everyone has to work overtime in a plant to afford it.
Locdawg, is right its a whiskey-tango sport and there is nothing wrong with that. WT comes in all flavors and income levels.............
Why do so many motocrossers play golf as well?
I just think it's incredibly stupid to home school a kid for a job that won't even pay off unless you're at the very top. Especially these days.
