You do have a point there. A well maintained cheaper bike is nothing to be ashamed of, and then the rider is the biggest difference. That is what makes MX so great as a motosport. Cool to have choices though.

We have the ONLY 2013 TM 85 in the US and my son loves it. He also loved his KTM 85 but says the TM handles better and has much more rip then the (2008) KTM 85. Parts are not an issue and everything on the bike is top of the line and way ahead of the jap bikes. The TM did not give him any advantages on the track other then handling he's much faster in the corners. we have a scalvini pipe on it and it is pushing about 23 HP. The AMA is making us run the bike in the MOD Class only because the bike is not Homologated. It is a very sweet bike and very fast but the rider wins races. I don't regret spending a little more on the TM you definitely get what you pay for. I see people on here arguing about others opinions, My opinion is.The TM is a better bike than the japs hands down and better then the KTM because the bike is lower and has a link style suspension..The TM motor is BULLET proof and I have faith in this bike.

The 85 business is its own world. Its not mini and its not full size. KTM has updated thier 85 twice now since the big 4 and although on paper it has superior components like 43MM forks and hydo clutches at the track the older designs are still very competitive. Thier lies the problem for Kaw, Yam and Suz. Do you do a major upgrade and have a significant increase in price or just keep slightly updating? Honda stepped out on that limb with the 150 and it did not work out so well with sales.

^^^^This. The 85 class is the cheapest to run. You can pick up good used 85's all day long for $1000 and be racing the next day. Everyone on this board bitches about the price of MX bikes and then turns around and advocates for more expensive bikes?...........................snappin' springs on the ignorance scale..........................
Well said! I am loving the 85 classes, I have roughly 1500.00 in sons race bike, RM parts and spare bikes are cheap and they are as competitive as any other brand

Thanks! I'm gonna put that number in my phone, I might just do that

Baja does get rough, IMO it's the hardest and most fun track in Mi, And they do an absolute fantasic job of promoting the sport

Any of you mini dads know which one im talking about? It's so trick, that even in "stock" condition they make you run "mod" class in the AMA. I was in awe of the thing at Budds Creek. Some guy out there has 2 of them.

Well, needless to say, he pulls 150Rs up those hills at Budds, no problem. But that 150 isn't really like a CRF250R baby sized, its more like a XR with a liquid cooled head, if that makes sense. its just not the performer that the big brothers are. KTM65s pull them too, and they cant even touch an 85.

I don't understand why anyone would want to run this? It isn't forced to race the mod class due to being "badass" it's because they don't import enough of them.. meaning there is NO demand. They tried to get them hyped and selling here but nobody was interested. My son rides a Cobra CX65... That I am interested in and every bit if not MORE trick that this thing.

I'm into the TM bikes for sure but yet again what will you do when it's time to qualify for LL's? Although I know those are bitchen bikes, I really do think you can win on ANY 85.

Well, this thread was started over a year ago. Smile

You have to admit that is a trick little bike. Kinda makes all those people who wimper about the Japanese mfgs. not being able to build a particular bike due to the "tooling" costs look pretty silly.
