Your break looks identical to mine. I have a pic of my hip as my avatar. I broke it about 4 years ago. I whiskey throttled it out of a whoop section off a berm, and the bike kind of spun me off and I flew through the air like a helicopter blade and landed on the backside of a berm behind it about 30 feet away. It was pretty scary. Grateful I landed on my side and not on my head. It was about a 4-5 month recovery for me, but I had a great doctor that is known in throughout the entire Bay Area (in CA) for how good he is with hip and knee injuries. It wasn't the fastest recovery, but it was a full recovery which is what you should be more concerned about. I had three screws put in just like you. It was very painful, but they gave me some very strong pain meds so it was never unbearable. Good luck in your recovery man. It's really important that you're patient with it and follow your doctors orders. It will be tough, but definitely worth it in the long run.

Hey man thanks for the info! I'm in no huge rush to get back on the bike, and I know it will be a huge mental battle. I'm going to do exactly as the doctors say, and not risk anything. As you could imagine, for a highschool student who's first major crash is a broken hip, I was pretty scared, but I'm confident in recovering and know I can with the grace of god. Quick question. What do you protect your hips with now? And was your leg shorter than the other at all?
Your leg should only get shorter if there is any damage to the blood supply of your femoral head. If that happens, it's possible that the ball will start to deteriorate from lack of blood flow and that is why your leg gets shorter. I had the exact same injury and outcome that Dennis Jonon had and over the years as the ball deteriorates your leg gets shorter. It sucks, but after having my hip replacement its all good.

Do you know how much it cost? I am guessing my insurance won't cover mine since it's a pre existing injury and my last insurance company that I had when I initially injured it stiffed me on the last $60,000 of my bill then dropped me a few months later.
It's been great, mobility is better than it was and I suspect would be better if I really worked at it.Pain is not an issue at all.I believe it would have cost about $60,000,I had to work to get my insurance to cover it.I know when I was looking into it the cash payers were going to Belgium to Dr. DeSmet, about $12-15,000 if I remember correctly.
This surgery was a life changer for me, I could still do everything it just hurt like hell after.Unlike now where I can do it all and still mow the grass when I get back and play with the kids.

How long have you had yours? I had mine replaced when I was 27 and its been 10 years now. It's holding up great so far, I've been riding and racing with it for about 5 or 6 years now.

How long did it take to develop AVN? And how much shorter did it get. Did it like happen over time?

Is it normal two weeks after surgery for my foot to turn a little bit different color if I'm holding it up for a while? (Like standing with a walker and holding my leg up.)

So what kind of protection does he use now? Those shitty hip pads in pants don't do a thing.

No not that you can see or notice. He limps a little most of the time from a fibrous bone tumor that he says is sore a lot. The lower part of knee brace rides over that area. But don't sweat it kid this is character building time for you, don't let any of this get you down or be too worried.

Okay, thank you. This has helped me so much. I've overcome most of my worry because of you guys. One last question though. When I hold my leg up for an extended period of time, it turns a little different color, only when I'm standing and I hold it up. Is this normal since it's just two weeks after surgery?

in 2013 i ended up breaking my femur at the top, my pelvis, and my acetabulum bone. when i was 19 i had to get a hip replacement and my HIP hasnt felt this good in a long time. I have a lot of trouble with my lower back, as i still have a 1 1/4 in. lift on my left shoe. i walk with a limp because of it but other than that and my lower back everything is good.

they say i am compensating with my back for my left him with caused degenerative disc disease, but that sounds scary so i try not to worry about it.

i still ride for fun and wouldnt choose otherwise, maybe RC cars, haha. if you have any questions i will be lurking but because of a new job i have not been around as much as usual...

I'm sure I might have to get a hip replacement down the line. Should I be nervous or scared?

11 years and one week. I started ring again 1 year after the surgery only raced on gp style event since, but I've had several good crashes and no problems. It is always in the back of my mind ,like I try to avoid hard dabs with my left leg.I hope I get at least 10 more years.

I was able to do everything I wanted for at 15 years after I broke it,but I would the AVN started affecting me after about 8 years.By the time of my replacement i had a 1 1/4" difference, post surgery I rarely limp. The way I understand it AVN happens because the bone dies due to lack of blood flow leading to bone loss.My advice is take time, heal up right, rehab it and keep doing what you love and if the time comes when you need it replaced you'll know and you'll have some good options available to you.

Sounds good. I really want to get back on the bike once I'm healed but I've got a lot of thoughts as to what could happen. I guess I'll address that when the time comes. Do you think I should be surgery free for atleast maybe 5 years?
