Varner at REM

Edited Date/Time 9/15/2013 4:17pm
Was prepping a friends gate at REM, Glen Helen MX today and saw a guy on the gate, Honda 450 wearing #34 Nick Varner jersey. Unfortunately, I witnessed the tragic Nick Varner accident and stood over Nick while Terry and others frantically tried to wake him up...so I ask the guy if his name is actually "Nick Varner" and he say's no, Nick was my son. So I said hello to Terry and told him I was right there with him when it went down and paid my respects and condolences.
Pretty quiet guy...considering it makes sense.
I never knew he rode or raced. My friend raced 40 NOV and finished just in front of Terry Varner but he was moving pretty good for a bigger guy....

I know the guy has been through the worst a parent could endure, and I read about his run-in with Jeff so i'm hoping the best for him. Get out there and do what you love...MOTO.

Varner is a great guy - I met him back in 1986 and he ported a cylinder for free via a buddy of mine, Ray Dog Groom and it was one of the fastest two-smokes I had ever ridden at the time. Varner has had his ups and downs but bottom line he is a true motocrosser and has lived and breathed the sport for as long as I can remember.

If any of you remember - I think it was 1984 at the Saddleback National—Ron Turner aboard a Cagiva, pulled two holeshots on a Varner built Italian 125 - against full WORKS back from the day. I believe he also helped build the LOP Yamaha Marty Moates rode to win the USGP, Pastrana's Amateur Champ bikes, MA800 Machines and the list goes on.

I don't know Terry personally, but I also had the experience of having a two stroke cylinder done by Varner, for a friend in England. The family was well off, and having had number of engines done by the top tuners in England and Belgium. The engine work done by Terry just crushed anything they'd ever had seen. They still talk about that motor today.

He did something that floored me when he worked on my 125 motor. He actually took the time to call me a couple of weeks after I picked it up and check to make sure that I was happy.

You must have been at SRA? Cool man, if I hadn't raced REM yesterday I would have done SRA today....love Don Suitor and that club. How was the track? Some of the most fun i've had on two-wheels were SRA GP courses at Glen Helen. :-)
