How to Chrome a Helmet like TLD etc

Do you folks think this is how TLD chrome paints their helmets?
I always wondered how, and I was sure that they didn't use electroplating like on metal...

The Univ. of Washington football team is supposed to wear this chromed lid sometime this season. It's similar to the TLD helmet that Notre Dame wore last year.

I tried figuring out how to do that a while back and it's pretty tricky. You have to be really delicate with the leafing and it takes a ton of practice.

I remember reading somewhere that he used to have to coat the helmet in copper to get the chrome to adhere. It was in a magazine interview I think. He said it was very costly and that's why Emig and McGrath were some of the only ones he did it on. It wasn't as easy to do back then when he first started doing chrome on helmets. I don't know if plastics were done the same way back then. I remember seeing Carmichael's chrome 80 at Loretta's. That thing was sweet.

If not mistaken, that was a vacuum metalized finish.

I remember rewinding the vhs tape at least a couple times just to get another look at this helmet:
