After training dogs professionally for over 22 years I know one thing for sure.

Never trust anything that will eat its own poop and wants to have sex with its mother.

All dogs naturally communicate with their mouths. Some more than others. There are only two types of dogs, ones that have bitten and those that may bite. Love the crap out of them but don't trust them.

That's what everyone says...till there pit attacks someone! You would have to be VERY stupid to own a pit bull if you have small kids. I had a Chihuahua that I was afraid of getting to close to my son.

5% of dogs are Pit bulls
66% of killer dogs are Pit bulls

Those stats are frightening to say the least and I actually like Pit bulls, but I'll never have one while I have children in the house.

I don't believe that. I have first hand experience with client dogs that had a super upbringing but ended up biting.

Why risk it though just to prove "my dogs would never bite!"

For example, Kenny got his jabs in on Josh, but did it in a way that wasn't particularly offensive. Hammertime and MXR? Not so much.
Never meant to take a jab at Josh, especially in this situation. He is one of my favorite riders and JGR is my fav team. It was mostly a jab at what I would consider a large amount of pit owners. Not ALL of them.

It's not about the dogs, it's about the people that own the dogs. Having a dog is like having a kid. It requires the same dedication. When you get an adult dog, you need to be very careful depending on your home situation, because you don't know the dog, or what that dogs history is, that may trigger an attack. Could be something simple, but children can't defend themselves. If it happened to you, it's a non issue because you can discipline the dog. The kids themselves can do things to the dogs that they don't like. After all, they are kids. When you get a puppy, the same thing applies. There are a lot of reasons to be careful of a new puppy and it's ancestry than just temperament. People used to be afraid of German Shepard's . My wife and I looked for a long time at puppy's, mostly AKA dogs, and didn't like the dogs we saw. We found a woman that had schitzhound dogs. These are the dogs that police get. It was bred in Germany, and cost 800 bucks in 1992. That dog was the gentlest dog, and the hardest to train. Slept with my son, who was 6 at the time, but we were watching. Had her own mind, but gentle. We trained her, mostly my wife, and that dog would respond to commands way better than most people would. Just use hands or eyes, and she did what you wanted. She could scare the shit out of you, but never touched anyone. My wife ended up training her for a therapy dog, and took her to the old folks homes for the old people to play with. A lot of them were afraid, and didn't like her. But some of them ended up getting a ball for her to chase down the hall and bring back to them, and missed her when she died. During the same time she trained a dog for guiding eyes for the blind. A black lab that just didn't want to listen. She got the basics down, and the people said it was good cause that's what they want. The dog ended up being a service dog for a blind woman in Kansas. Kids are defenseless, dogs are animals. The two should not be left alone together without adult supervision. A well trained dog is a wonderful companion. A dog that has no training is a pain in the ass to everyone, and potentially dangerous.

First thing.....all the best to the Grant family. That can be very traumatic.

We have a Pit in our house and couldn't imagine having a better dog. She is a mix with who knows what (rescue) but is clearly Pit. I was not a dog person but my wife and kids REALLY wanted a dog. So they surprised me........after threatening to divorce my family for the surprise we settled into a very happy situation with our PitBull.

Our dog has displayed incredible affection for anyone that will pay attention to her. So is it environment ?? temperment ?? some good ones , some bad ones...??? I really don't know but, could the statistics that have been presented be somewhat skewed simply because so many Pits are raised to fight and then turned loose on the world ?? How many poodles were raised to fight ?? Collies ?? not many. I don't mean to suggest that these dogs are not extremely powerful or that they don't require respect but unless you have a Pit that was raised to fight, a little responsible ownership will result in a very happy situation most times.

The Grant's should not be judged because they have a particular dog in their home. Judge Grant on his racing results, line selection, fitness or whatever but not his choice about his family environment. I am certain that they are second guessing those choices now and really just need good wishes for their boy.

Don't know about Miami, but Denver just wants to keep you safe. I'm sure people are a lot safer now that you can't have Pit Bulls, or buy magazines with more than 10 rounds...

I'll say this. I am a dog person and not afraid of dogs in general. Not even afraid of pits. My bro fostered a small black one named Juice. He was very loving but man did he intimidate the heck out of me. He would leap completely over my bro's couch from floor to floor. He would lick you to death but then destroy his toy when u played with him. I could hold him and play with him and then my bro gave him to a good friend of mine. My friend loves himto death but I think plays with him the wrong way. He plays with him on a cable lead and hangs toys from the lead so he can jump and hang from them. He means well but it definitely adds agression to the dog. ....hmmm

I was mauled by my brother-in-laws pit when I was twelve. He never did anything stupid with that dog, and raised it no different from our labs. My brother-in-law killed the dog the same day with a 12 gauge.

I happen to agree with hammer on that one. Some people are delusional when it comes to animals. They're good dogs and mean dogs, and the same can be said about dog owners.

Hopefully something positive comes out of this thread like at least one pitbull owner on this site who has kids wakes up to reality to what can happen instead of learning the hard way like the Grant family sadly did.
Its amazing to me why anyone would ever risk there childs well being raising them around a pitbull!!!! Get real its a dog you can live without it the child's safety should be a way higher priority
