Ok, so y'all might not care, but I'll say it anyways, first off my uncle owned a track nearby for a while when I was younger, I raced a good bit, but a few years, financial problems, and kids, and he had to close it. Well just a few months ago I've gotten back into riding, I bought a klx 125 for 300 bucks not running, got it home, cleaned the carb and it fired up. Well after a few months I decided to go bigger, sold the klx for 900, (after I bought a used bbr for 150, so I had 450 total in it) then went and picked up a 2006 crf250r with nothing wrong with it besides the lack of kick starting, it will push start, but only kick start when it's hot. Any ideas on what this could be? Also smokes for about 30 seconds when you first start it. Now to the bad part.. I bought it Friday, and last night (Sunday night) my buddy talked me into riding it and hit a guide wire going about 40, tore him and the bike up pretty bad. He's got a broke arm, bruises, broke nose and a bad cut from where the wire got him. But he's home now, and texted me earlier saying he will pay for the damages, so far I know it needs a radiator, side fender, front fender, front number plate, bark buster, and the forks are scratched up, but it won't hurt the performance. Anyways. After I get it fixed and all, what do I need to do to start racing? There's a couple tracks an hour or so away, so practicing and all is no problem, even though I've been practicing a good bit, I still need more. Is there a good time to start? What class would I be in? Any tips from other riders out there? Also where would be the best place to order fenders, radiator and bark buster? Just gonna go ahead and get all new fenders since all I have is a good back and left side. Looking for cheap, bc he's a good friend and I don't wanna screw him over. Sorry for dragging on, but if it's like other forums, pics will make it better!!

To get started racing find your local racing group, go watch a race and talk with some people about what they require and the schedule. If you think you are ready then go to a race. If it looks like more than you are ready for then watch The class you would be in for what you need to work on, how big of jumps are they doing, how fast do they go through corners, how hard and close are they racing each other. Then go practice until you feel ready. Most likely your local racing group would put you in the 250 D class just because it's your first time racing with them, on that bike. If you do good then they will move you up. That radiator might be able to be fixed. If it was mine I would send it to ICW ( main thing is bike stands, but they do awesome radiator work too.) there are alot of radiator repair shops just look in the back of mx magazines. I don't know who sells the cheapest plastics but UFO, Acerbis, and Cyca are the top choices. If all else fails eBay!

Thanks for the info, but sadly we don't have a group close by that races, I know 3 people that race (2 brothers and their dad) but I don't really know them, I've been trying to talk to the youngest brother (my age) but he doesn't seem to care at all on what I want to do. Also the radiator is a lot worse than it looks in the pic, it's got a big dent in the back and the mounts are bent pretty bad. I'm just gonna go ahead and get a new one. Can anyone give any input on my starting problem? This is a big setback right now.

I would probably at least check the valves to see what their clearance is, are they out of adjustment. Many u tube videos on this.

Sometimes tracks are an hour or two away. You could go to some track practice days and get some good experience first.
Also a good way to meet people that will have good local advice.

Well. Got the valves fixed by a buddy of mine. Got the bike back, put motor in, radiators on, tried kicking it over and something didnt sound right. So I took the valve cover off and noticed the little spring on the cam, opposite side of the timing chain, I think it's a compression release, but I'm not sure, anyway, it is really loose and I don't think it's supposed to be that way. Any help on that? Ok next problem, got passed that and looked a little more and noticed the timing chain tensioner bolt wasn't in there, decided I better check the timing since it still wouldn't crank. Took the bolt out of the side and lined the mark up and the cam marks aren't where they're supposed to be, so it's out of time. Could it have messed anything else up? Also before my kick start didn't rub the frame, but now it's rubbing pretty bad, I don't remember any spacers in the motor mounts or on the kick start, am I missing something, or is there another possible cause? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you need to sell that thing and get something else...2006 was a huge problem year for those Honda's...all sorts of valve and intake issues...most likely what is causing your starting issue. I personally wouldn't touch the 06-08 Honda 250s with a 10 foot pole. Your best bet is to save up and buy something that is in good shape. Honestly you will end up dumping a bunch of money into that bike...money that could have been spent on a nicer bike. I have seen it time and time again. Not trying to rain on your parade, but just some advice. Good luck

Yea man, I'm considering it. I've only got 1300 total into it so far. Maybe I can get it going and sell for 1500 and buy another.

Noticed today it has an oil leak on the left side cover. Love the power and the way it feels, but I'm hating the problems.
