Hello to everyone. Let me start off with how this all came about. Memorial Day 2013, me and my girlfriend go to a local Motocross track to spend the day ( Briarcliff Mx in Ohio). I made a mistake in the whoop section on this track. I got out of control and gave my bike full throttle by mistake (kx450) which the bike ripped a huge wheelie and spit me off the back. I was literally 3rd gear wide open and for those on here that have ever ridden a 450 MX bike knows how fast and scary this can be when out of control. I landed on my butt so hard my legs came up to my face at full extension, my left knee smashing into the front part of my helmet and that's when I felt and heard the dreaded POP. I finally rolled to a stop, which now I could see my bike flipping end over end before it finally stopped. I knew that 24 years of riding had come to an abrupt end. While laying on my side, my leg was totally bent and I could not straighten it and I felt a huge lump in my thigh area, I didn't know if my femur was broke or my knee was broke. When I went to take my helmet off I realized something was wrong with my right shoulder, turns out I dislocated it, so know I'm scared. My shoulder hurt 5 times worse than my leg which was really weird. Ambulance took me to the ER were I laid on their backboard for 4 hours before I was given pain meds (thank god for pain meds) and then the Dr put my shoulder back in which hurt like hell going back into the socket and also put my left leg into a straight brace and said, you need to see an OS ASAP. My X-rays showed I had a Ruptured Patellar Tendon. The lump in my thigh was my knee cap. I could not use crutches due to my blown shoulder so now I'm the proud owner of a wheel chair and crutches. Lucky me.......
Next day I see an OS and surgery is set for the following day on 5/29/13. OS said my patellar tendon was shredded and that he sewed it together in a special pattern, drilled 3 holes thru my knee cap an anchored it to my knee cap that way. Dr said when he was in my knee it looked like I also tore my ACL but he could not repair it due to it having a different rehab than the RPT rehab. So that surgery is later down the road. I had my right knee ACL fixed in 1994 with a patellar tendon graft so know I have 2 messed up knees with both patellar tendons involved one way or another. Sent me home, and I must say that this surgery is very painful. I have had 12 major surgeries and lost my spleen thru dirt bike accidents and this one takes the cake on pain. The next two weeks were a living hell, pain was so high and I was stuck wherever I was when my girlfriend went to work because I could not move due to the shoulder being messed up and my knee in severe pain. I usually just stayed in bed and would pee in a pee container, thanks again ER for giving me 2 pee cups. It made life a little easier. It took me 2 weeks before I could use my crutches, shoulder finally felt a little better to do this. Also the pain went down to a normal level in my knee. After 2 weeks the staples came out, but the Dr said I needed to be in a straight brace for 4 more weeks and by then we will start PT which starts on 7/11/13. So now it's just the waiting (going crazy) game.
Has anyone on here ever ruptured their patellar tendon before or know anybody that has? If so, we're you ever able to ride again? And as far as my shoulder is concerned, how long does it take to heal as this seems more like an injury more people would be familiar with in the MX world. Thanks in advance.

That sounds horrific! I feel bad for you.

As to the injuries I can only answer for the shoulder part. I dislocated both of my shoulders in a crash, did the rehab, still does six years later. Took me over a year to be able to ride rutted tracks. Normal living went great just after a couple of weeks, the daily pain goes away pretty quick. My problem today is the little things like when I move my shoulders in a circular movement it feels like you cut the nerves with a knife, simple things like wiping a window, washing my car etc. Have some problems sleeping on the side. I can live with all of that, the shoulders feels strong and I'm no longer afraid of them not being able to hold pressure. Always do your rehabilitation training!

Wish you a speedy and good recovery!

I've never ruptured the patella tendon but I've done pretty extensive knee damage on 3 separate occasions (all the same knee). Each one seemed a little harder to recover from. But after a couple months you'll be walking with slightly less pain each day. Just take rehab seriously, I can't count how many miles I put on a stationary bike working the catch and pain out of mine. After a while you'll feel normal again and itching to ride.

I had a acl / Pcl reconstruction , I never had a problem with it since , the knee cap feels weird the shave it and put a kanzi screw in he middle , make sure you get a custom knee brace , like a cti or a orothech , good luck you got 6 months off hell coming

I believe I was there when you did this. That's a tricky section. We've all been through this. I have a new patella and new acl (seperate incidents) titanium rods, screws, all that crap. It all heals with God's grace. These injuries take much longer than bones. The brain takes the longest. It never forgets. Whether you ride again is up to you. Don't sell your bike. Cross train. Give the patella 6 months to attach then get back in the saddle. It'll take another 6 months to get back up to speed. Expect your mind to fight you every step of the way. In a year you may discover motocross gives you a reason to wake up in the morning and there's no need to take good knees with you to the grave. Good luck my friend.

Seeing your location I would highly recommend a visit to Dr. Tesner @ Grant Sports medicine.

You sound like me, if you're going to screw something up you might as well screw everything up! I crashed in Colorado quite a few years back, broken big toe on the right foot, blown rt. ACL, severely bruised all of my rt. side ribs and broke my rt. clavicle. Unable to use crutches and was staying in a condo up four flights of stairs! Was pretty damn brutal but like you stated, my shoulder and ribs hurt so bad I didn't even realize my knee and toe were injured until they tried to stand me up in the ER.

Best part of the story is six months later, first time back on the bike, I got three first place and one second place finishes. Give it time and do your therapy!

Thanks for the shoulder advice Olson. Yea 181, I saw you there that day. You said you have a new patella, how did rehab go with that injury because the tendon has to re-attach itself to the patellar? Are you able to walk normal without a limp? The hard part is going to be mental down the road for sure. Yes, eagle I will look up Dr. Tesner, thanks a lot. Thanks everyone for the responses. New knee braces will be ordered for sure.

Rehab was tough I'm not gonna lie. It was much more difficult than the acl. I was on that god damn torture machine that bends your knee for hours every day for months. I started out with a tight new one at 180 degrees. I had to slowly work my way to a full 90 degree bend. In the end God willing you should make a full recovery. I walk with a limp but I have two Ohio titles since then tooSmile

Ask your doc to prescribe your knee braces so insurance covers them. Mine were $1500 ea.

Boy I'm sad for me that I have all the info you need
And sad for you that that happened to you to
First I have been into this sport since 78 when Hannah was the wildchild
Also grew up in Ohio for many years
Wish I ripped my pattela on a mx bike
Great state Ohio!
I don't want to hear any Pitbull lovers slamming me for the story so if you want into on what's next send me a pm and I will give you my number
I was mauled by a Pitbull working in a Back yard building a patio 7-11-11
and his big mouth was attached to my leg below the knee
I turned to the right and he ripped my knee out of socket and then meniscus ripped while running for fence
Knee cap was on the top of the thigh just like yours
Nasty pain no one needs to endure
Robbie raynard said the worst pain he was ever in was the pattella graph to fix his ACL in one of his ten thousand ACL surgeries
You will ride again
I was off ten months
Knee locked straight 2 months
Physical Theropy will kick your ass smooth up
Just do all they say and it will get better
But
Don't forget
It will never be the same after this

Yea Barracode I'm going to ask for one of those machines. I had one in 94 for my acl repair, and I'm thinking it would do wonders for this type of injury. When I parked next to you at RT 62 MX a few times, I didn't really notice you limping and never would of thought you had this type of injury before. But I did notice you do have a really nice bike. Lol. I love moto, what can I say. Thanks for being honest about the rehab, I definitely don't think it's going to be easy. I told my girlfriend I wish I would break bones instead of tearing tendons, seems bones would heal faster and stronger, instead I tear ligaments and tendons.
Thanks MX4EVR, I will listen to the therapist even though it will kick my butt for sure. I know it won't ever be the same, I just hope I have something to work with so I can rebuild it back to as good as it can be. I have found out that without the patella tendon, walking is virtually impossible, so I pray everyday for a speedy recovery and no set backs. Like Barracode said, God willing I make a full recovery.
