Finally got the new recording studio functional.

The control room is good to go, just need a few acoustical tweaks in the live room.

Already have some local musicians champing at the bit to get on the schedule.

Yep, protools.

The studio is across the hall from my real job.

My brother and I were in the music biz for many years before our painting biz took off, so when we built our new offices, we put in a jam room.

Since then, we've had lots friends come over to jam with us, and they were always telling us to make it into a recording studio.

Well, a few months ago, one of our friends (a sound engineer) who has been doing recording at his house, needed a big room to record some drum tracks...

After the experience of recording from the conference room, we decided to go ahead and build a real control room.

Trinitite, I'm not a producer, just a lowly musician, but soon to be A&R guy.

Are you guys clipping down the dynamic range of the sound to make your recordings louder? Seems to be the trend these days due to demand for MP3s and smaller playback devices.

BTW, nice stuff you have there. What kinda monitors are those?

We haven't recorded anything in the new room yet, but we have no intention of pandering to the iPod generation.

Dynamics are the soul of the music; you'd have to be an idiot to screw with that.

Dude, the reality is that a large amount of people are listening to music today are using MP3 and other hand held device formats. There are very very few folks who have a 'stereo' at the house anymore. And to meet this demand engineers have been making their recordings 'loud' to sound better when played back on these cheesey playback devices. To accomplish this they are clipping off the dynamic range of recordings.

ha...affinity for music doesn't necessarily mean perfect genetics (hearing!)

The whole analog sound thing was pretty well debunked 10-20 years ago.


But, no doubt Racer is right about compression. Loud and proud. Tower speakers are so 80's...hahaha...guess I'm old skool...


Has anyone ever honestly tested their hearing? I bought test CD's for setting up my theater. It includes a range of pure frequency tones. My hearing is pretty well shot above about 16 kHz Sad

Sucks, but can't do much about it.

Damn!

My ears hurt from looking at that.

We plan to market our wares on the merit of the tunes, not on sheer volume.

Since we plan to sell our stuff on iTunes we may get some pressure to go with the flow, but I promise to try and buck the system.

Too bad no one has a turntable anymore...

My wife bought one of those a while back to transfer my old band's vinyl records to CD.

The needle fell out of the stylus before the first side of the first record was over.

Threw the whole rig in the trash.

You need to get some bass trapping in a control room of that size. The auralex is good for controlling flutter and the highs, but the lows are going to be bouncing all over the place in there and you will never get an accurate read. They make big honkin cylinder types, you'd need them in your front corners.

Stand those KRK's up and lower the stands for some better imaging too. Tweeters should be at ear level when listening.'


Is that UA channel strip a 6176 or the one with the La-2A comp built in? Those are nice units, we have a few of them in our B room along with some of the newer AMS neve aes preamps. The UA ones blow the AMS Neve stuff out of the water. They are shit now ever since Rupert left.


You should hit up the AES show that is in LA this coming year. I was like a kid in a candy store when I went a few months ago. When it comes around, hit me up with a pm or somethin, I could prolly swing you some free passes if you'd like.

Oh, and the Waves L3 does a good job of "kissing" the bus with some nice compression if you arent ham fisted with it. Really nice plug in - miles ahead of that L1 garbage they had a few years ago.

Nice bait there Gilligan! If you must know, one is a Pioneer RT-1020L, the other RT-1020H. The first runs at 7.5ips and the second, 15ips.

I use SM900 +9 on the 15ips deck, and LPR35 on the 7ips deck.

I was hoping Geezer would not go that rout.
But if he can sell a million copies then why not put it out on the MP3 format.

Just keep the rest of us in mind who like something better.

Dude thats a nice looking set up in your LR.

Right now in mine I only have my Denon receiver, NAD cd changer and my pair of air foils. Still sounds decent.

Sold all my NAD amps, pre amp and big speakers. No room and to close to the neighbors to play it to loud any more.

Now I mainly rock out in my truck. Thats where the real stereo is at.

I just stumbled across this thread and saw my name in your post. Yeah, I did have a pretty nice setup, but I have so little time to write and record now that I've really backed way off. I still have my main instruments and a little mixer/firewire/mac setup for getting ideas down, but with three daughter aged 2,8 and 10... well, lets just say that I'm lucky to still race vintage bikes and try to play a little here and there.

We're building another new house over the next 18 months and I did have the architect drop a small music room in the plan. It will be fairly basic, but enough to get the creative part of me attended to for the next few years.
