How I remember it.
Hart attempted his backflip at Gravity Games first in the summer of 2000! Didn't really land the first one, was so close! However a lot of people credited him with the first ever backflip. It was so gnarly to even attempt it at the time. I'm one of the ones who thinks it was close enough to count. Had he not done it, no telling when it would have been attempted. It changed everything. The second attempt came at summer X in 2001 in Philly. He pulled his hand off on take off and came crashing down from way up there in best trick.
In between those two attempts, Metzger had a session out in the dunes where he nearly pulled one.
Then Caleb came along. Nearly broke himself on half the first time out trying. He then went back and was the first to actually rotate fully, stay on the bike, case the shit out of the landing but actually ride away. He then was an automatic invite for the next few years at X games. Even winning a gold. The dude was badass. (probably still is) I remember watching all the events he was in nervously awaiting his jumps. He wasn't the smoothest rider at all, but when he said he was going to do something, he did it.
Metzger was the first one who actually brought it to a competition and cleaned house as far as results in Philly at X games in 2002.
Who cares really?

Freestyle won't be at X games in Los Angeles this year, but it is because of the venue not the lack of interest by the public or ESPN. It will be back next year.
well I can officially not have to worry about those comments anymore as I have handed in my headset and clip board! Life is too busy to commit to X games.
