Men's 4x100 Freestyle Relay - The WR was shattered!

"This race is the biggest obstacle for Michael Phelps in his quest for eight gold medals. The men's 4x100 freestyle relay has been a notoriously unpredicatable event over the past two Olympics, and this year should be no different. At least four teams have a realistic shot of winning gold in what should be the fastest relay race of all-time. "

The USOC gives $25,000 for gold, $15,000 for silver and $10,000 for bronze. many professional athletes with lucrative contracts give their prize money to charity. also athletes' sponsors may give them additional bonuses for performing well. for example, speedo has pledged to give Phelps $2 million (if i remember right) if he wins 8 gold medals.

Yep, didn't the US break it by something like 4 seconds?

Regardless of times it was a great event. I am a racing fan, even it's men flopping around in a pool, and that final leg was some of the best racing I've seen in a long time.

Fantastic race. Did you hear me screamin? LOL. But juxtapose this against the heart break of watching Hoff lose that full body length lead in the last 25 of her 400 as she tied up and missed the gold by 7/100ths......ouch.

Oh man, the look on her face when she looked up at board for the results was heart breaking.

I am stuck at work and didnt get to watch it, but am taking in live commentary. looking forward to watching the replay tonight.
The Aussie lead swimmer broke the individual WR too, beating Phelps in the process, i hope Phelps is racing the individual 100m freestyle, that will be his toughest test.

Extra points Dougie, for usage of the word "juxtapose."

As to the French, it couldn't have happened to a nicer country. Smile

Kind of reminds me of Gary Hall talking trash about the Aussies in 96, maybe... They had Thorpe, Klim etc... and they beat the Americans. Good straight up racing all right.

Lezak threw down a 46.06 which is a world record too.

It was amazing to watch.
Just for reference.
The old record before these games started was 3:12:46. That was set 20 years ago.
Canada beat that time in the finals and got 6th.

How is it to train 4 years and know going in that you can go world record time. Then get there and its only good enough for 6th.

Six out of 8 teams were world record pace swimmers then to go 4 seconds under.. WOW how fast can these guys go?

Im sitting her chuckling because I know that you and I are both High School Drop outs. Thanks Ger.

Regarding Talking trash. Its a head game that can work. But it can also backfire. This one blew up in their faces.

I wonder if eating Crow tasted like Chicken for the French. Or maybe like Frog legs.

I dont think she ran out of gas as much as she just blew it on the very last stroke to the wall. Deffinate heartbreak, felt bad for her.
