Maybe Roczen, Canard, James - certainly not in all time wins, but who emulates the passion and fun this guy still has for all things moto? RV has said before how RC ruined the fun with the seriousness and training he brought to punish all who lined up against him, forever changing rider's commitment, preparation, training and sacrifice to be competitve. It's the fun and passion that's why many of us have the longevity to continue risking those cartwheels, but who do you think among todays riders will stay fans of the sport and love for riding as the King himself has?
Great interview on MXA w/John Basher - http://motocrossactionmag.com/Main/News/JEREMY-MCGRATH-INTERVIEW-HONDA-…

McGrath seems like such a cool and laid back guy. Seems like a great guy just to hang out with, moto and knock a few back after a hard day of riding.

I remember one year at the Glen Helen national, I was talking to MC's dad and Jeremy calls and asks him how does he get in? This was after he stopped racing, or was doing SX only I don't remember. Anyway his dad told him tell them who you are! And then his dad tells me that his son has not changed one bit! He never got a big head!

Yeah, that's totally what I got from the MXA interview vid recently too. He pretty much embodied the SoCal attitude and coolness of his era, but had the talent and passion to win to get the job done...whereas a lot of riders that lived the "rock star" MX lifestyle back then didn't.

I somewhat agree with what RV said about RC though, as the attitude in the pits and with the top racers is an "all business" one these days, with very few smiles & little laughter and fun going on.

Best part (IMO) of the MC interview was how he said he'd been spending as much time at home with his wife and kids as he could tending to his wife's recovery...said "if she's doing ok, then I'm doing ok".

That was cool.

Mc epitomizes motocross cool, those guys back then seemed to have more fun with it though.

I think Roczen would be the closest to that now days. JMO

He was at the BelRay booth at Indy. Just standing around talking with everybody. Jeans and a t-shirt. Laid way back. Was pretty cool.

Yup, beware the Peilgroso Tequila Bottle, too...it'll be coming your way if your sittin' in Baja with the guy and laughing at his "Good ol' Day" stories...

This guy can make you laugh until you cry...from Guy Cooper to RC...MC has THE stories.

We pitted next to MC at a local SX in Fresno a few years ago and we got to hang out with him throughout the day and i swear he is just pure moto.

I think fun/passion are a main reason why the vet classes are the largest now. Our era of fun on dirt bikes was almost limitless with riding areas, cost of play/racing/tricking out your ride - all good stuff. Today's riders seem really shortchanged on the whole experience. Seems a lot of posers wanna-bes. I don't know, I'm sure in many areas craigs list two strokes and open areas still can provide that passion for some. Perhaps the cost both financial and effort's just too much for most. Certainly there are exceptions, but it seems as though that fun ship has sailed for much of our industry.
I enjoy riding every so now and then with Dan Villopoto, Grandpa Fred still likes to spin a wheel, but I wonder about Ryan at my age? I guess many of us that have been around this sport long enough know of former pros that have sacrificed so much, that riding dirt scooters for fun is a distant memory for them.
It's cool to see Mc's enjoyment, maybe justifies our own craziness?

Hmmm, I know a guy who used ride bmx with him, and he said he was cocky and kinda full of himself. Wifes sister went to school with him, and says the same thing. I've crossed paths with him a few times, sometimes he is cool, other times not so much.
I took a friends kid to his book signing along with my kids, he seemed more into talking with his man friends than anything else. There were more hanger ons with him than people buying his book and wanting it autographed.

Met Jerry West over the weekend at a golf tourney, coolest guy ever. West and Pastrana are on par with the fan base.. MC not even close.

"Hear-Say" from the Peanut Gallery & one observation from a book signing "back in the day"...?

All w/ a common thread of contempt & jealousy.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jeremy at a dealership signing and he was super cool, down to earth, and friendly. We talked at length about old races, what he was up to now, etc. During his heyday, I was a fan, but Emig was my guy. As the time has passed and I have had some interaction with him, I am really a big fan of his. Jeremy is the king of this sport and always will be. You won't find another professional athlete that is as big as he is in their respective sport that is as cool as Jeremy is. We are lucky to have him as our Michael Jordan.
