They have those NASCAR morons on a survey of who is the greatest auto-athlete of all time? Those NASCAR clowns arent worthy to carry SuperTex's nomex underwear......

I only see two names on that ballot that even deserve to be on it. If you can't do it all, you ain't the greatest. Andretti and Foyt won in everything from sprint cars to 24 hr endurance races, but Andretti has an F1 title as well.

Of course its hard to navigate those lumbering barges. But those guys are one-trick ponies, and the gear/engineering they have now cant even begin to compare to the low-tech machines the Oldschool guys endured 40+ years ago. And to win, in all those disciplines, in those old cars, is a huge feat.

Earnhardt began his professional career at the Winston Cup in 1975, making his debut at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina in the longest race on the Cup circuit, the World 600. Earnhardt drove an Ed Negre Dodge Charger(#8) and finished 22nd in the race, one place ahead of his future car owner, Richard Childress.

Do the math. 1975 was 38 years ago and i'm sure he did some driving before then, thanks for admitting Dale was awesome! lol.

I`d have to pencil in Paul Goldsmith. He won both the Daytona car and bike races when they raced on the beach. USAC Champ, Milwaukee Mile, and placed pretty high up at Indy several times. Like Racer said, Wins were alot tougher to come by back then.

Joe Leonard not only won 3 AMA Grand National Championships and the Daytona 200 on 2 wheels but he won back to back USAC Championships and the Indy 500, talk about doing it all. I guess espn has never heard of him.

How about you do the math! SuperTex was out there dominating in oldschool Sprint cars, ChampCar and Midgets when lil Dale was 7 years old watching Howdy Doody in his 'jammies and AJ had won the Indy-500 when Dale was only 10. If you had any clue how hard it is to get even a single Feature win in those old cars, much less all those Titles/Championships, youd get scope of the ridiculous talent that AJ had driving any race car. Back then it was about the driver, not the Engineers on staff and big-budgets. Hell AJ and his dad built their own engines. And when you factor in the mechanical-DNF rate of those older machines, his stats are almost not believable. (just like in the early years of MX mechanical-DNFs were very, very common) In '66 he had just won a 100-mile dirt track race one day, and the very next day he had a 200-mile asphalt race and the rear-engine Lotus he was scheduled to race wasnt ready, so he took the dirt car he had raced the previous day, washed all the mud off of it, threw on some pavement tires and went on to get 2nd that day IN A DIRT CAR ! And when he felt like jumping in those overweight fendered barges, he kicked everyones asses in those too. He had USAC stock-car Championships that spanned over a decade, including winning the Daytona 500. Winning just ONE Championship in a career would satisfy most any race driver, he stomped those fender-boys asses over & over just for kicks for over 10 years.

Give me AJ Foyt and Mario Andretti anyday, just head and shoulders above most guys.

Not to take anything away from Earnhardt, the guy had skill and heart for days but just not the same level as Foyt and Mario.

Regarding SuperTex being consistently fast on oldschool equipment - of all the different racing genres - here is Smokey's take on it. I guess if you look back on it, Smokey was right, when Penske ushered in the, big-money wind-tunneled, super engineered cars that were easier to drive, AJs unique talent failed to shine as bright.
