This thread is the result of when stupidity and an internet connection meet. Man, the "full retard" button gets pushed a ton on here.

After a wad-up like Dungey had in the qualifier, I'm amazed he wasnt hurt worse. He rode cautious, and MADE SURE he got into the main, by riding smart, and not risking having a slower guy go full stupid and take him out..... again. Into the main, lousy gate pick, and once again got ran off the track by slower riders decisions. Rode hard, to 8th place. Excellent way of turning lemons into lemonade. That's why he has so many wins, at such a young age. Dunge isnt stupid, and he's listening to advice from his team manager, who also isnt stupid.

I'm surprised he doesnt come on here and listen to some of the genius that oozes forth on here though. There must be 100 collective championships just in the mind boggling knowledge that gets puked in here....... Stay by the phone guys. Im sure one of the factory teams will be calling a bunch of you any minute, for a full support ride. It has to be true.
x2... Funny shit

I heard Dungey has been through 3 different rear shocks coming into the season. Considering he went away from using the air shock last night only tells me he's still searching for that perfect set up. Not a good sign if they are switching back n fourth testing new shit during a championship run. That bikes going into it's 2nd year of development while all these other teams n bikes have had years of development n testing along with notes to fall back on. He and the bike should only get better as the season goes barring injury..

Reed is also having similar problems...

I agree, and I was surprised they switched back to the normal shock. I would guess that "The Man" had some guidance there. I wish I could be a floor sweeper in the race team shops sometimes. Id love to see just how much work, thought, and creativity goes into the race efforts. It would be better than my job Im sure, even at 20% of the pay. lol

Explains why Villo was 16th at A1 I guess?

dungeys only problem is his lack of aggression. i really dont understand why he couldnt pass jimmy with 3 laps left in the lcq.

They don't hand out trophies and points for LCQ's. Why risk taking yourself and Jimmy out for the night show just to get that 19th gate pick? Is it really worth the risk being aggressive for that 19th gate pick on what seemed to be a shitty luck night for him as it was?

Yeah that's part of it but what can you do about some guy flipping his bike into yours and running you off the track?
That just sucks, What would have coming in 1rst vs 2nd in the LCQ have done for him? Nada. If you watch his start in the main he kinda squidded a bit, but, had he got a better start he would have been right in the middle of the big crash. In this case the bad start helped him. If you saw the heat race crash it's pretty easy to accept he was hurting. We'll see how the rest of the season goes.

I can see him not doing well in Pheonix because of the crash but at A1 he didnt look good to me. He was slipping and sliding all over.he didnt look smooth at all and was making a ton of mistakes and he is usually one of the smoothest guys on the track.

OK, I'll say it. Last year was a fluke. I don't think he will win in SX this year.
Outdoors is where he will shine again. That is, unless he stops being Mr Nice guy and gets aggressive.

I wouldn't go as far as saying fluke, dungey is an awesome rider. And i wouldn't discredit this years riding by asking whats wrong with him... Lets face it, the field is deep. Take out a few new guys, put a few other back at their 2012/2011 levels, and we might see him as more of a championship threat. There are new threats along with guys that have stepped it up immensely.

2013 POINT STANDINGS

450SX
1. David Millsaps (SUZ), 45
2. Justin Barcia (HON), 39
3. Trey Canard (HON), 38
4. Chad Reed (HON), 36
5. Ryan Dungey (KTM), 33
6. Jake Weimer (KAW), 31
7. Ryan Villopoto (KAW), 27
8. James Stewart (SUZ), 27
9. Andrew Short (HON), 27
10. Joshua Grant (YAM), 21

I must ask you experts, if Dungey isn't much of a title threat, then where does that leave Poto and Stewart? They must be out of it all together since they're so far behind in points huh? Maybe we could just as easily say that his "not up to expectations" performance this week was the real fluke here.

It's been 2 races. TWO.

Bunch of Nostradamus' around here.

There is nothing wrong with Dungey at all. He did great at A1, 3rd place. He has not been getting the best starts. Starts are basically the only thing that matters in supercross. At Phoenix, obviously he had bad luck and nothing else. In his heat he was forced off the track by another rider, which eventually lead to a very bad gate pick. He had no hope starting on the outside of that main event, was again forced off the track by other riders and obeyed the rules and entered the track where he went off. So he was basically in dead last and way back at the start of the main and managed to get back to 8th in a stacked field. It was a bad night but not disastrous by any means.

If you look at the points, Millsaps has a bit of a lead but Dungey is not far back at all from 2nd place. History tells us Millsaps is not very consistent. Ya, he is doing great but we are only 2 races in... I will call it now and say Dungey's 8th place in Phoenix will be his worst finish of 2013 in both SX and MX. Now he has his bad luck out of the way and him and Roger will work like mad men getting that KTM dialed for some better starts and holeshots. Thats the only thing lacking. If RD gets a holeshot he can easily win. Like any of the other fast 7.

Dungey is the smartest rider out there. Since 2010 he has racked up the most points and wins in sx and mx, yes even more than RV. Much more actually if you do the numbers. Dungey is very versatile. He only pushes the limit when he has to. He plays the long, safe game. Ride consistently, level headed. Limit risks. It's amazing to me that there are still so many people who doubt his ability. It just shows your lack of intelligence. I can see Dungey having an amazingly long and successful career with his smart approach to racing. In the end RC might wish he didnt retire so early... If Dungey is around long enough Larocco or Windham style, he will break records.

It looked to me RD let top Jimmy win.
I watched the race twice and I think he was just being nice,It didn't matter anyway.A shitty gate is a shitty gate.
RD will be top 3 this weekend.
Stamp it.

Dungeys problem in sx is the same thing it's always been. He rides to competitions level he's racing with. If he starts up front he's as fast as Stewart, Villopoto etc if he starts mid pack, he races at mid pack speed, where guys like Stewart and villopoto turn fast laps even in traffic. This is also the reason that you can almost guarantee dungey will be there at the end of the season and Stewart fans are hoping and praying he'll be there at the end.
1/14/2013 11:42am
As a former racer, the problem with getting a bad start, you have no idea how fast the guys up front are going, all you have to go by is the slower guys so its hard to know how hard to push or not. It's also hard to tell what the best lines are. The leaders watch each other and notice where one another is a little faster or slower. If you are stuck mid pack, its just really difficult. Dungey has had a shot at the championship in SX every single year he has raced, this year will be no different. He will be in the mix.

It's early but I predict RV or RD for the championship. These guys always rise to the occasion. Since 2010 they are the only ones who have been winning championships. That says something. Reed and Stewart are still quick but they are very near the end of their careers. Barcia and Canard are fast, no doubt, but they both hang it out on the edge too much, still. Inconsistency has always been both of their downfall. They are just as fast as RD and RV, but over the course of a series not as consistent. Millsaps, well. gotta give him credit, I dont see it lasting though. In years past he has been inconsistent as well.

@Kent Christensen only problem with everything you just said about not knowing how fast to go with bad starts is guys like Stewart and Villopoto almost always seem to know how fast to go.... Faster then just about everyone on there way to front. Dungey seems to always settle into the comfortable pace when he's in traffic, which is fine but sometimes I wish he push it a bit more

JS and RV also have a history of more crashes and injuries than RD. Their riding style is all out or nothing. Dungey is more calculated and careful. If RV had ridden from the back in A1 like Dungey in PHX, he would have gotten a top 10 instead of a disaster finish like he got. James panics a lot when he has to come through the field and he either does great or crashes. I actually think CR and JS are learning from RD this year and playing it safe (except JS already injured himself at A1 practice, that guy is insanely injury prone, sheesh). Meanwhile RV JB and TC are balls out, dont care if I crash or not.

Dungey goes balls out when he needs to. It all depends where he stands with a few races to go. Until then he will just try to stay in the hunt, within 10-20 points of the leader. If he happens to be the leader, great, but his approach is stay healthy and consistent, 2nd or 3rd place is great. He will for sure win atleast 1 race this year. I say he gets atleast a few wins in SX.

Stewart and Villopoto also have a history of more sx titles. It is a great strategy for staying healthy and being there at the end but I think if he pushed it a little more often when mid pack he may be at the front of the points instead 10-20 points back.

Who are we to question Ryan Dungey, though? People on here are always saying stuff like, "oh, hes 3rd-5th fastest" totally discrediting him. On his bad nights he is 3rd to 5th. He won many supercross races last year, many motocross races. Has won 3 championships on a 450. I think he knows exactly what hes doing and he is doing it right. Nobody should be questioning him any more. I swear that some of you just look at race results and dont even bother to actually watch the whole event. Obviously Dungey was screwed over by other riders in Phoenix. It happens. I bet he wins this coming Saturday, as long as nobody gets in his way.

Phx SX:

Dungey 17th to 8th in 20 laps
Villopoto 6th to 2nd in 20 laps

6th to 2nd with a tip and passed Stewart, Canard, Millsaps, Weimer, Reed and closing on Barcia. All I'm saying is Dungey IMO would benefit from riding a little more on the edge on occasion during the sx season.

@Christiansen they all would win if nobody got in the way

Walk in Dungey's boots and get back to me on championship strategy.

How many of you have raced for titles in SX? State championship? Regional?

Dungey was in 18th and a whoop section behind on lap 1. He did a hell of a job getting back into the mix.

As far as Poto, Canard gave him a gift and Barcia was on cruise mode from lap 17 to lap 20.

If there is no injury to Dungey, you can bet your ass he will be in mix.
