Davi Millsaps Has Grown Up Before Our Eyes

Throughout his career, Davi has always been chastised about his supposed lack of work ethic. Personally, I think this was vastly overblown by those on the outside looking in and making comments about things they didn't truly know about, but it has been a common theme nonetheless.

This year, he has left the comfort of JGR and signed with the Rockstar team, he has dropped weight (I'd guess around 15 pounds), and he just won the first race of the year. What has caused this?

His son.

Nothing like having a kid to light a fire under you. It's not just you or your spouse you have to worry about. Now he is responsible for providing for that little guy, and that is the most motivating force on the planet.

He has the talent, appears to now have the endurance, and he definitely has the motivation. I don't think this is the last time DM18 is on top of the box this season.

It was great to see. I think that was the best I have ever seen him ride! Blazing fast, and charged while maintaining an agressive posture on the bike the whole race. He looked like a different rider to me. Couldnt help but notice that he was able to turn that Suzuki under anything, especially the Yamahas. And I'm not hating, as I own one of the backwards beats...........

Honestly, I think he turned his carear around last year. He was finally heathy so he could actually train, came into the season thirty pounds lighter, finished the Supercross season in 2nd in points, and fought for a few main event wins. He even ran strong outdoors until he got hurt again.

I look at this year as just adding on to what he started in 2012.

Let's face it, at the end of 2011 I thought he was done or at least on his way out the door.

He has seriously turned things around though.

I don't know if the lack of work ethic argument was overblown: it seemed to me like that's what caused the schism between Davi and Colleen (Inside the Outdoors episode of late). That's not to say that she is right but it is to say that she wasn't "on the outside looking in". Ditto with Albrecht - he basically said as much in multiple interviews.

I am happy for Davi and I hope he makes a serious run to the title this year. That'd be the story of the past few decades if he can make it happen. It's a little early to call but he looked to me like he could be a player.

HIs poor work ethic was never overblown.

His lack of health was probably understated though. There's a LOT of injuries/personal issues that go unreported in this sport for various legitimate reasons that the fans never are aware of and it can skew ones opinion of a rider falsely.

Maybe a lot of Davi's injuries were due to his lack of preparation.

Either way, what is relevant is that everyone matures at a different rate both physically and mentally. We look at a guy like Davi with all the physical talent in the world and forget how young he is. And most arent even remotely aware of the amount of sacrifice put in by guys of his talent in order to get to this level. Burnout is inevitable. Just look at a guy like RV, he cant wait to retire. It's a grind and Im totally in awe of the way he can hold it all together. He's as mentally tough as there has ever been.

I know for me, I didnt really "get it" mentally until I was about 22. At that point I finally understood what practicing and training was about and really committed to it. I have friends that "got it" at age 12. It's different for everyone and sometimes when you finally get it its too late and your sport/opportunity has passed you by. Whatever the case, it appears that Davi may have gotten past the "burnout phase" that all young MXers go thru and he's healthy and 100% committed for the first time since his amateur days or even ever.

We'll find out over the next couple rounds as things play out. But judging from what Im hearing and what we saw (passing Canard back was VERY telling) I dont think A1 was a flash-in-the-pan event for Davi. And its not his first win ever either so the moment wont be too big for him. I believe he will be a contender throughout the year and hopefully the rest of his career.

I'll have to admit, after Davi's kidney deal, I figured that would be it for him. I'm glad that he proved me wrong.

The family drama probably doesn't help one bit, and the yard sale where he lost 3/4's of his kidney was huge in a career window as short as these guys have.

I was more impressed with him making the Yammie work for him for second last year. That is what this year is going to take, grinding it out the best you can week in and week out. I don't think there will be any runaway trains this year.

He is quite good looking in person, lol!
