Any chance of being a flagger at a supercross?

Edited Date/Time 12/8/2012 11:20am
I moved to Cali about a month ago and am hopefully going to be able to catch all the west coast supercrosses. I was wondering if anyone knew how to get set up being a flagger at one of the races. I remember not that long ago that they used to give you a free meal and shirt but you wouldn't get paid. I was just wondering if this was still an option. Thanks for any help.

I realize what it would entail. It's an important job that should be taken seriously. It's not like I would be trying to high five the riders while they were going through the whoops or anything. I just think it would be really neat to get that perspective on the racing and knew that it was a possibility. Back when my grades weren't good enough to race I ended up flagging many times when I was younger. I just want to see if anyone knows who I can call to get started.

I've always wanted to flag at a supercross, probably the only way I could get on the stadium floor... short of streaking

We used to be apart of Seattle motorcycle club, my dad got the opportunity to flag through the club, it was cool for him I'm sure. I got an all access pass and ran around the pits at 9am with out anyone there. It's was awesome!

If flagging a SX or at NAT is on your list - make it happen! I have worked Seattle SX (kingdome) and Washugal. Great experience's. I have also done the Aterrisk day at the SX, another awesome experience.

Gotta love this sport!!!!!

Yea it's definitely one of those things on my bucket list. I've also dreamed of getting on the asterisk mobile medic crew but then went to their website and saw in big bold letters that they weren't accepting applications. They put another nail in the coffin when I saw that half the people on it were doctors. Darn it I guess I'm going to med school!

I tried for years to help after seeing some not so professional exhibitions of flagging.
2 decades of experience in sports car and mx flagging wouldn't get me there. I had worked over 10 years at a very popular mx track the last time I tried as the head official. I even had excellent contacts, but sadly I wasn't someone's brother in law, or buddy. Oh well, their loss.

Good luck.

My dad and I flagged at the Seattle supercross in 2008...and all I did was email the ama and express your interest and they will hook you up with the people you need to talk to make it happen. It was an awesome experience! But lots of work, but well worth it!

This^ Usually it is nothing more than the local ama representatives. You hear the comments on Pulp MX all the time about the guys just being there to see the show, get a free meal, and a T shirt.. Why they dont have a professional flag crew that follows the entire series is beyond me.... That said you will probably have better luck with a National than a SX race these days.

The "this industry" thing that gets tossed around over and over is pretty damn tired. I've worked in a few different industries. Here's a news flash...it's like that everywhere.

Yep, but its doesnt change the fact that "This Industry", is tops
when it comes to outsiders being just that. Its like school days
when you were the new kid, everyone but a few act like you're
from a different planet. A big concentration of small minded people
and sorry if it rubs you the wrong way, but its not a lie, or mis leading.
Just because you have been "Accepted" into the little niche that it is,
its alot easier for you to say that. Shirley you have not always been
"in the know", and know from what angle i speak.

Sun we axtually agree on something. That said, the burden of "fitting in" falls on the shoulders of the new guy. I also agree with Mr. Vital about the majority of our world is the same way. As with anything in life. Its all about what you make of it. You can whine about the industry not welcoming outsiders, or you can figure out a way to become part of that group. Many have been able to do it.

Does this mean I have to get some flat bill hats and a monster tattoo? I'll try emailing the AMA instead! I'm still too scared to say anything to the riders even if they walked up and said hi. I don't think I'm ready to become an insider just yet.
