Ha ha :-) when I write Dowdys old mechanic I just want everyone to know that he has built many bikes for top pros such as John Dowd & Kyle Chisholm & Robby Marshall & Josh Clark & many others. My point is he knows his shit & only does things that work & doesn't say or do anything willy nilly without doing the research first. He is a sharp as them come.

Now I am really going to be paying attention to this thread seeing that my 250sx is coming in soon. I am super excited and nervous about getting back on a 2 stroke. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

to you 300sx kitted guy. couple questions, hope the OP doesnt mind.

1) are you running the SX head?

2) are you running your SX ignition, or the included XC ignition?

3) have you lost the ability to rev the bike out? i want a 300, but not at the sacrifice of being able to rev the bike out (think 250 vs 500 2t)

I love my 300SXS-kitted 250SX.

I don't see why anyone would advise against it.

my NEWCRF250 my 12 ktm 250, w/300sx kit , i use my ignition from the stok 250 sx, n i have the sx head, mike s at cycle playgroud did his magic to it, my bike revs to the moon, just as much if not moree than my 250sx all around it has a very usable powerband, i explain it this way it the same way ur 250sx is except it revs way further than ur 250, n has way more torque...the 250sx brought the fun back into mx for me, the 300 makes the smile underneath ur helmet , last alot longer! u can not make a 250 sx run the same regardless if u port , blue print, ron bushy etc.

i believe youre also over at ktmtalk right? you have the 36/39 oval bore carb too right? did you ever run the bike with the stock 36mm and are you able to compare to the 36/39?

thanks man

I just started reading the thread and I'm so glad I did. Who makes the filter kit for the KTM 250? I tried googling it and wan't able to find anything.

Can this happen on the other KTM's? My son's 65 has the traditional setup but I plan to buy him a new 2013 85.

Still debating between an RMZ450 and a KTM 250? I'm 42 and my son races so my choice will be more about having fun than winning races.

Found the filter kit!

So do you need to take the air box apart to fit the Moose setup?

That Moose pic was a generic photo of another brands air filter system. I ordered it & all I got was a new cage almost identical to the Twin Air's cage. It's newer updated billet cage with like 5 long pins that go into the air box & align the cage correctly & that won't let it move at all once you have it in there. It's WAY better than the stock KTM cage but it's not really what I wanted so I'm kind of bummed. The set up I have now will have to do & it seems to be working great.

My opinion on you debating between the RMZ450 & the 250SX is an easy one. If it's all about having fun & not about winning races I would get the KTM in a second cuz this bike is WAY WAY more fun than riding an RMZ450 or any 450 4 stroke. With 3 little mods & the correct jetting & the FMF pipe & silencer combo my KTM is 450 fast & 25 lbs lighter & you can rebuild it with a butter knife in like 25 minutes.

I found a cherry 2010 RMZ 450 with posh pipe, black excel rims, radiator braces etc. with less than 10hrs for $5k. The cheapest 250 I found was $7k and the used ones are bring $6000 plus so you might as well buy a new one. Decisions......

My son races but I really miss riding on practice days. I just ended my divorce and I have custody of my son. It looks like I'm going to come into a little inheritance money so it's time to celebrate with some new bikes.

Thanks!

What jetting did you finally end up running? I noticed the magazines were recommending a 158 main and if you started pinging go richer.

How do you like the FMF pipe? My son is sponsored by FMF and we get a great discount but I heard the PC pipe was awesome!

Has anyone tried the Dick's Racing Carb mod?

I have the stock 42 pilot, air screw at 1.5 turns, NECJ needle on the 3rd setting & a 172-175 main jet with the FMF & the FMF shorty 2 silencer on it & it Fn rips & sounds like a 250 works bike. I heard the same thing about the PC pipe but both of the fast experts back here that have the 250SX's are both running the same FMF combo & KTM specs the FMF pipe & sells it through KTM Power Parts so that's what I bought & I couldn't be happier with it. I asked the powers that be about the Dick's Carb mod & I was told not to waste the $400 on it so I didn't.

PS.. I jetted my bike based on the mags too & it was pinging something awful with a 160 main jet & on a 50/50 blend of Sunoco Supreme 112 octane race fuel & Sunoco Ultra. I then put a 165 & then a 168 & it still pinged so I went 172 & the pinging was gone & the bike sounded different & ran Fn tremendous so that's when I put a 175 in it & that's what I had in it til 2 wks ago when Ron was doing my motor mods & he put a 172 back in it cuz he said it ran better with 172.

Wow!

The 172 seems like quite an increase from the stock 158. Normally with race fuel you can go leaner? I just came across a 2011 SX 250 with 5hrs for $5000 so the RMZ is looking a little less attractive.

I plan to buy my son a new SXS 65 and possibly the 2013 85 (he's bugging me for an 85) but I have a hard time paying full retail for myself a bike.

Try & get a 12 cuz it has linkage & it's a better bike. I forgot to mention that I'm also running it at 32:1 which will definitely be leaner & call for a bigger main jet. My lower end will thank me later :-) 60:1 must be just brutal on the lower end & will definitely shorten the life of it dramatically.

my experience matches diggers...i run the same ratio and i too was pinging with a 162 and 165 at sea level in the sand. it pinged so bad with the 162 that i couldnt get back to the truck fast enough. 165 was better under WOT but still way more than any engine should deal with.

175 main solved it and i will lean out from there. every bike ive ridden in the past needed to be leaned out, the ktm seems to want to be richened up

I just checked out the Loudmouth Intake System & it looks really good & very well made & I wish I saw this before I spent the money on the Moose set up with 6 brand new filters... :-(

Rode again yesterday & I let a few buddies ride my bike & they were shocked at how fast it is. I let a guy with a 12 250SX ride it & he just called me & said he needs his motor set up like mine. I rode a buddies 13 300 XC & it's jetted & with the same pipe & silencer as mine & it was a slug in comparison to my bike. My motor hits much harder & has way more bottom end & definitely revs way higher. I didn't like the power delivery at all. 2 of my buddies rode it also & said the same thing.

Ps.. for all the guys with the 300 kits. I know it wasn't a 250 SX with a 300 kit installed but I was just curious on how a 13 300 XC compared to my bike is all.

Love your bike! I just bought the powder coat to do my frame orange. I went with a flo neon orange but I don't like the color that came cuz it looks more like a traffic cone neon orange & not the neon orange that I saw on the Langston Racing KTMs at the Southwick National. So I'm going to try another neon orange & if I don't like that one I'll go with the orange like on your frame or Team KTMs bikes. What color is yours anyway? I'm sending out my stock cylinder with a Vertex 300 piston & making my own 300 kit & then well see whats up but as it stands now I'm thrilled to death with the performance of my 250SX with the mods that we've done to it. I'll set it up as a 300 & race it in Florida this winter but I'll have the other top end with me & will be switching it back if I'm not totally blown away how it works. I told you I rode my buddies brand new 13 300 XC on Friday & he has is jetted like mine & has the same FMF pipe & silencer & I wasn't impressed at all. My motor worked better everywhere on the track where I rode it. I know it will be different when I do it cuz my engine we will set the cylinder up identical to mine & of course the SX head & ignition will make a huge difference. I just wanted to feel his new 300 against my 250 & there just was no comparison. The only way that his 300XC could stay with my bike on the staights is if there was rope around my waist pulling it along behind me :-)
